2023 marked the 70th anniversary of the American Library Association’s Freedom to Read Statement.

“We trust the people of this nation to make their own decisions about what they read and believe.”

This past June, the ALA reaffirmed the statement, adding that “the freedom to read is essential to our democratic society. It is constantly under attack.”
