Mission Statement:
The Weedsport Free Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing facilities and materials for education, recreation, personal growth, and information to the residents of the Weedsport Free Library Service Area.*
*Please Note: the Weedsport Free Library Service Area includes the Town of Brutus, the Village of Weedsport, and the Weedsport Central School District.
The Internet Policy:
The Internet is an information resource which enables the library to provide information beyond the confines of its collection. While the Internet offers access to a wealth of information that can be enriching personally, professionally and culturally, as an unregulated medium, material can be accessed that may be consider offensive or disturbing.
o Internet service provided will be limited to the World Wide Web and gopher sites accessed through the Web.
o The library cannot control or monitor the vast amount of material accessible from the Internet. The library affirms the rights of parents to determine and monitor their childrens' use of library materials and resources. Parents are required to accept responsibility for their child's access to the Internet and to sign a parental permission form allowing access to their child. Children under the age of twelve will be required to be accompanied by an adult.
o Classes and individual sessions will be available in the library to familiarize patrons with using the Internet. Library staff will be available to provide limited assistance.
o Users will be required to sign in before using the Internet. Users accept responsibility for the sites they select to view on the Internet.
o The Internet terminal(s) will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, during library hours. Access time may be reserved, no more than one month in advance, for a maximum of one hour per week, per patron. Non-scheduled users will be required to vacate for scheduled users. The library reserves the right to restrict time on the Internet to 20 minutes, according to demand.
o Should library staff members require access to the Internet, patrons may be asked to temporarily vacate the terminal.
o Internet material may either be printed off the library printer at a cost of ten cents per page, or downloaded to a diskette, which can be purchased at the library desk for one dollar.
o Failure to use the Internet station(s) appropriately and responsibly will result in revocation of Internet use privileges. Tampering, altering, editing or damaging computer hardware and/or software will be grounds for revocation of internet privileges and may result in suspension of library privileges and/or criminal charges.
