The Whittlers Club

The Weedsport Whittlers Club was organized in March 1914. The charter members were a small group of men who spent some of their spare time socializing and whittling in Adelbert Mc Wethey's boat and woodworking shop located at 8925 North Seneca Street. However, after several years of inactivity the Whittler's Club was officially dissolved on April 11, 1974.

The Whittlers never had a regular meeting place nor did they have regular dates for their meetings. The president and secretary made all

meeting arrangements and kept the secret. On the date selected the members all gathered at a central point - usually the main four corners and followed the lead car to the dining place. It could be in Weedsport but just as likely in Elbfidge or Victory. The number of meetings averaged about three or four per year and the program must have been popular because in 1932 the club boasted a membership of one hundred eleven.

First president was Wilbur H. Howe, father of J. Austin Howe of Weedsport. Mr. Howe traditionally wrote the first by-laws of the club. The original by-laws cannot be located but Old Brutus Historical Society has a revision dated 1921. The principles set forth in the code are highly amusing and pretty well reflect the conservative thinking on issues of that day.
