We have put this information packet together to help you acquaint yourself with the Town and provide information for services that you may need.

The Town of Brutus was incorporated in 1802. It has the a population of 5,013, the largest in Cayuga County this includes the Village of Weedsport. There are 32 miles of Town roads. The Weedsport School District is in Brutus and covers parts of Cato and Sennett. The Town Highway garage is located on Towpath Road where the Superintendent of Highways is available along with the Motor Equipment Operators. Work hours are 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Summer hours are flexible, they may not work Fridays.

The Town Municipal Building is located at 9021 N. Seneca Street in Weedsport and houses the following officers:
1) The Supervisor and Town Board maintain an office and are available part-time there and, in emergencies, at their homes. They have regular monthly meetings on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 P.M.. Special meeting notices and Legal Notices are found in the Citizen Newspaper and are posted on the Town Bulletin Board in the Town Clerk's office.
2) Town Court is held on Tuesday evenings and on the first and third Thursday evenings of each month. Court starts at 7:00 P.M. Both Justices are part-time and have a part-time Clerk. Their office is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 Monday - Friday.
3) The Town Clerk's office is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Some services available are marriage; sporting and dog licensing; building and zoning applications; certificates of residency; Auburn landfill annual stickers and garbage bag coupon books; Town tax information and Town tax payments along with general information.
The Town Clerk is also the Registrar of Vital Statistics and Records Management Officer for the Town as well as the Town Tax Collector. Full payments are due in January without penalty or interest. First installments are accepted until February 10th. Thereafter full payments can be made up until March 31st with a penalty and a service charge. After this date, second installments are paid to the County Treasurer.
4) The appointed Assessor maintains his records in the Municipal Building for both the Town & Village. His Clerk is available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 2:30 pm.
5) General elections for Federal, State, County and Town representatives are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November at the Town Municipal Building. Village elections are held the third Tuesday of March at the Town Municipal Building. Forms are available from the Town Clerk for mail-in registration.
6) The following services are performed by contract:
a. Animal Control by the Finger Lakes Dog Protection Agency, Carl Collier, for the Town & Village (phone 253-4367).
b. Fire Protection by the Weedsport Volunteer Fire Department.
c. Senior Citizen Programs by the Brutus/Weedsport Senior Citizens Club.
d. SCAT Van services for senior citizens through Transportation Project of Cayuga County by appointment. Call 253-0996.
e. Youth programs through the Brutus Recreation Commission.

The Village of Weedsport is the only village in the Town and has a population of 1,996. It was incorporated in 1831.

The Village Department of Public Works is located on Earl Street along with the Village’s Recycling Center (834-6411). The DPW hours are 7:00-3:30 Monday through Friday. The Recycling Center is open Thursday from 9:00-5:30 and Saturday from 7:00-3:30.

The Weedsport Fire Department is manned by volunteers along with the Auxiliary and is located in the same building as the Village Offices. There is also a volunteer ambulance squad. Fire protection for the Town outside the Village is provided by contract with the Village.

The Village offices are located at 8892 South Street and house the following officers:
1) The Mayor and Trustees maintain an office and are available part-time there and, in emergencies, at their homes. They have regular monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M.. Special meetings and Legal Notices are published in the Citizen Newspaper.
2) Village Court is held on Monday evening at 7:00 P.M.
3) The Village Clerk's office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Summer hours from 8:00 to 4:00. Monday evenings 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. the Mayor is available. Some services provided are: building & zoning applications, recycling stickers, water-sewer payments and service. The Village Clerk also serves as the Village Registrar of Vital Statistics and Records Management Officer as well as Village Tax Collector. Tax payments are due in full during the month of March.

We are proud of our "Aqueduct Park" located on Route 31 west from the Village. There you will find a restored "Lock" from the Erie Canal and a "Veterans Memorial" second to none. You are invited to have a picnic there along Cold Springs Brook.

For nature lovers the Erie Canal Towpath (along Rte. 31) has been cleared and is available for hikes along what we call the Conservancy Trail. This trail goes all the way through our Town and the Village of Weedsport and on through the two connecting towns of Mentz and Elbridge.

Organizations: The local Chamber of Commerce is a fairly new organization and is open to new members. Other civic and educational organizations include APT; Volunteer Fireman & Auxiliary; Weedsport Free Library; American Legion; Lions Club; Masonic Lodge and Eastern Stars; and a Garden Club and Beautification Committee.
