Powers Library

"A part of the past, a part of the Future"

Moravia, New York

Dr. Cyrus Powers, physician, Civil War surgeon, world traveler and community leader.  His personal library was the basis for the Powers Library collection.

Abigail Powers Fillmore, wife of President Millard Fillmore and aunt of Dr. Cyrus Powers, is perhaps best remembered for starting the first library in the White House. Apparently, this former school teacher considered the absence of books in the Executive Mansion to be a grave omission. She preferred reading to almost any other activity.
