Named the fourth-best small rural library in the U.S. by the American Library Association in 1999, the Edith B. Ford Memorial Library has been a vital resource for residents and visitors of Ovid and nearby communities since it opened in 1961. The Library’s visionary founders were committed to serving the public in ways that the previous library (then housed in the nearby “Mama Bear” building) was not able to do. The building itself reflects this lofty vision, including distinctive stained-glass portraits of great thinkers and artists, whose depictions were intended to “add impetus to the desire for self betterment.” The architecture is full of inspiring details, including ceramic tile illustrations of the arts and the evolution of communication. Quotations abound. Even the roof, with its pyramidal surfaces, was designed to create a feeling of uplift symbolic of the expanding horizons imparted by research and education. |
