Director's Corner

by Kay Zaharis

Is spring here?  We see it in the library.  Several volunteers have given their time and energy to dusting the shelves and books.  The staff is very grateful to those people; we see the difference.  I hope that when you come to visit your library, you too will see things sparkle

We have also begun weeding our collection. Since we have multiple copies of fiction books which have not circulated in many years, duplicates are being removed.  One of the benefits of weeding is to remove the “clutter” so the “good stuff” is more obvious.  Hopefully, you too will notice some books on the shelves which you hadn’t previously seen, and you will be enticed to check them out.

New Program!

We are proud to continue our “Chapters in Time” series. These four programs depict times and places in history.  They are free of charge and intended for all ages.

The second chapter will be

April 20, 2004, Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Children’s Room

An Evening on the Erie Canal

Merry Mischief present a two-hour show bringing to life the period of the Erie Canal and its effect on central New York.  The Merry Mischief trio, two presenters (Don Meixner & Jon Anderson), along with Dawn Jordan String Theater and Puppet Stage will all be on hand to make this an evening to remember.  All performers come in costuming of the period to bring history to life.

[This event is made possible with funds from New York State Council on the Arts decentralization grant program administered regionally by the Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse and Onondaga County, and the Cortland Morning Rotary Club.]

Display of the Month

DREAMING…OF SPRING?

Our table features magazines and books (many new this month) for all stages of your lawn and garden needs.  Come in and not only dream, but plan for your “dream garden”.

New This Month

We added nearly 20 new audio books in March.

Please note - We have started putting spine labels on the audio books.  During the process, the audio books will continue to be arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.  For the present time the fiction and non-fiction remain together.  In the future, however, the fiction will be separated from the non-fiction.  Our goal is to provide easier access to the audio books.

We also added dozens of new health books, many from the Mayo Clinic Health Information series, on subjects including vegetarian recipes, yoga, stress reduction, alternative medicines, vitamin and mineral supplements.

We have new books on working with concrete, new decks and patios, fence and gate ideas, wood flooring, home spas, bricklaying, lighting ideas, water gardens and landscapes, as well as a guide to working with pelts, fur and leather and a six volume set of fishing book which include baitfishing, trolling, and ice fishing.

Reminder

Some of our extremely popular magazines for the current month are not found on the periodical racks located in the general reading area, but are located behind the circulation desk. Please ask our library personnel for the magazine you wish to read if you do not find it.  There is a new list available of our nearly 300 periodicals.

Jessica Hines, Children’s Room supervisor, who is on the Advisory Board of the Family Reading Partnership of Cortland County, will be there part of the time to greet you.

The fair will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Ch.Ch.Changes…

We have moved the “McN” green labeled books which were on the lower shelves under the audiobooks to the book case at the far side of the circulation desk.

We have moved the new non-fiction books which were on the top shelf of the book case at the far side of the circulation desk to the large table in the center of the room.  Now ALL new non-fiction is on this table (unless they are on display.)
