Director's
Corner
by Kay Zaharis
The new year brings new staff, new ideas, and new
services to our patrons. On
Fridays, patrons will soon notice that Jessica Hines will no longer be
in the adult section of the library. She will be able to spend her day
in the children’s room where she can devote more of her time and
talents as Children’s Room supervisor.
Debbie Cross is now our Friday person, and occasional
Saturdays. Debbie has
experience in several elementary schools throughout the world and
brings ideas and skills in all aspects of library tasks, including
circulation, administration, book repair, computer, research, and most
importantly, assisting patrons find information. I am sure that you
will find Debbie helpful and friendly.

New! Programs
We
are proud to present “Chapters in Time” a series of four
programs that depict times and places in history.
The programs will be presented through interdisciplinary methods such
as storytelling, theatrics, puppetry, and songs, and are intended for all
ages.
Free of charge, due to funding received from a Cultural Cortland
Decentralization grant and the generosity of the Cortland Morning Rotary Club,
the programs will be held on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.
The
program series is as follows:
The
first program is February 3, 2004 with Tales of the Underground
Railroad. Vanessa Johnson of
the Onondaga Historical Association integrates music, African instruments,
drums and audience participation in her unique style of storytelling.
Other
programs to follow are:
April
20, 2004 An Evening on the Erie Canal
June
8, 2004 A Southern Belle’s view of the Civil War
October
5, 2004 Folk Tales and Songs from Around the World

Children’s Room Notes (cont.
. .)
Proceeds from the used
paperback book sale during the 2003 Pumpkinfest were
earmarked for the Children’s Room, and several
purchases have already been made: a small sofa, a
rug printed with bugs and butterflies being used
especially for story times, Halloween treats and a
few new Christmas decorations.

Wednesday morning’s
10:30 “Tales for Tots” has had a wonderful
start! Since changing its format in September, our
attendance numbers for story time have been very
encouraging. Library
staff celebrated Halloween by wearing costumes
during the reading and handing out treats after. The
group also marched around the room with noisemakers
in November and made marshmallow snowmen in
December.

Pictures of some of the Children’s Room activities
are in the entranceway. Feel free to stop by to see the
happy faces.
