Computer Cleaning

Because of the increased risk of the H1N1 flu virus this year, it is becoming more important to the libraries to keep their shared computer equipment clean.  Here are a few tips, and remember, clean your computers while they are turned off.

Keyboards and Mice

These are the two pieces of equipment that are handled by everyone that uses the public computers in your library.  Keyboards, especially, collect dust and residue that can spread germs.  Cleaning them can be as simple as turning them upside down over a wastebasket and shaking to clean out dust and debris that may be in them.  A can of compressed air can be used to blow out the tougher stuff.  We would not recommend removing keys from the keyboard as they can be damaged.

For both the keyboard and mouse you can use a paper towel with an all-purpose cleaner such as 409 or a generic equivalent.  Clorox wipes are also handy for quick touch-ups.  Run the paper towel or wipe over the keys and mouse to remove surface dirt and disinfect them.

Headphones

Headphones, like the mouse and keyboard, get used a lot.  Wiping down the ear covers, head bands and cables with an all-purpose cleaner or wipe should disinfect them.

Monitors and Computers

Flat panel monitors can be dusted with a dry, clean cloth or a dusting product such as Swiffer.  For finger prints and other dirt, you can purchase monitor wipes from stores such as Staples.  For flat screen monitors make sure that if you purchase wipes you buy a brand that specifically states it can be used with flat screens.  You should not use Windex or other cleaners on flat screens because they can cause the screen to deteriorate, turn brown and crack.

All-purpose cleaners and a paper towel can be used to clean the monitor bezels and stands and are fine for the older CRT monitors which have a glass screen.

Wipe down the outside of your computers as well, especially the power button, to disinfect as well as remove surface dust.

Desks

Dusting the computer desks is also advised.  Pledge or a similar product on wood furniture is fine or use your all-purpose cleaner and a rag for plastic, laminate and other types of desks.

Hand Sanitizer

Several companies produce hand sanitizer that can be left out on the computer stations for your patrons.  Hopefully it would encourage your patrons to use these products before and after using your computer stations and keep the entire library environment a little cleaner.
