Annual Report Mini-Workshop
I am offering a mini-workshop on the state Annual Report on Tuesday, January 29th, 9:30 – 11:30.  This workshop is ideal for those individuals who have never filled out the report before or who need a refresher.  Individuals other than library directors, such as treasurers or anyone responsible for the financial section of the report, are also welcome to attend.

Please let me know if you’re interested in attending – seating is limited – by Friday, January 18th

When is the Annual Report due??

The Report is due Thursday, February 14th, not Tuesday, February 14th as it says in the information packet that you (hopefully) will have received by now.  My apologies!

Polaris Tip of the Week

Scheduled Reports in Report Manager

If you have set up reports to run automatically using “My Subscriptions” in Report Manager, you might have to update the end date for those reports. When these reports were initially set up they may have been given an end date of 12/31/2007, which means they will not run automatically in 2008 unless you change the end date.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Log into Report Manager

  • Left click on My Subscriptions

  • Left click on Edit by the report you want to update

  • Go to the section “Report Parameters Values”

  • Change the End Date by highlighting the 7 in 2007 and changing it to 8

  • Left click on OK

DATABASE TRAINING NOVELny GALE DATABASES

The NYS Library has announced that free online training sessions (“webinars”) will also be available for the Cengage-Gale content included in the NOVELny pilot project will be offered on a monthly basis starting in 2008. These one-hour sessions will offer librarians and library staff members the opportunity to learn about databases (and database interfaces) available for children, young adults and adults as part of the NOVELny pilot project.

The new PowerSearch Plus search interface will be previewed, and the webinar will cover features and functionalities common to all Cengage-Gale databases. Also featured will be NOVELny promotional materials available from the NOVELny Web site (http://www.novelnewyork.org) and free training resources available from the Cengage-Gale support site (http://support.gale.com).

The first webinar is scheduled for January 28, 2008 Monday at 2:00 pm EST. No registration is required.

LAST QUESTION OF THE WEEK Which database has a copy of the book George Washington: his land purchases made the empire state.  Utica, N.Y.: unknown. 1931, 12 pgs?

It includes the quote: “Washington took oath of office as first President in New York City, the Nation’s first Capitol, after he had welded the Indian Lands with the area above and below the Bronx and called this creation the Empire State.”

Answer:  at www.flls.org → Electronic Databases → Genealogy & Family Research → HeritageQuest Online Genealogy (ProQuest)

Did you know that in addition to Census images from 1790 -1930, you can also search for people and places in HeritageQuest Online’s collection of digitized Books and periodical citations (Periodical Search Index - PERSI) and search for individuals in its Revolutionary War era Pension & Bounty Land Application files and the Freedman’s Bank (1865-1874)? The articles in PERSI also cover genealogical research methodologies. You can request copies of articles for a cost, generally up to six articles for $7.50 with additional copying fees.

For example, searching Books for Cayuga Co., I found these three items among others which can be accessed in your library and remotely 24/7:

       1)     Allen, Henry M.

An index to the histories of Auburn, New York

Auburn, N.Y.?: H.M. Allen?, 1940, 29 pgs.

2)     Charles Carroll Hemenway

Central Church semi-centennial: addresses and papers prepared in

connection with the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the

founding of the Central Presbyterian Church of Auburn, New York Auburn, N.Y.?: unknown, 1912, 165 pgs.

3)     Anonymous

Manual of the Cayuga County Historical Society: Auburn, New York.

Auburn, N.Y.?: The Society, 1893, 29 pgs.

A search for “wills” in PERSI How To’s yielded these results among 212 hits:

1)     Understanding the language of wills

Moultrie County Heritage. Sullivan IL: Apr 2006. Vol. 34- Iss. 1-

2)     Value of wills in research

Ancestors. Richmond, Surrey England: Apr 2006. Vol. - Iss. 44-

3)     Abbreviations in wills and other documents

Gallia Crossroads and Cornerstones. Gallipolis OH: Dec 2005. Vol. 1- Iss. 3

4)     Researching estates and wills

Family Chronicle. Toronto Ontario Canada: Apr 2006. Vol. 10- Iss. 4-
