LAST WEEK’S QUESTION OF THE WEEK  What is the Cardiff Giant and where is he located now?

The Cardiff Giant was a “supposed fossilized giant” unearth in Cardiff, NY in October 1869. In reality George Hull, a cigar maker, commissioned the sculpting of this ten ft. long 3,000 lb “giant” from 11 foot block of gypsum, and buried it at his cousin William ‘Stub” Newell’s farm in upstate NY. Gideon Emmons and Henry Nichols unearthed it one year later while digging a well and one of them is said to have exclaimed “I declare, some old Indian is buried here!” Newell then started charging the hundreds of people who flocked to his farm $.25 each to see the “giant”. The Giant was sold to a conglomerate and put on display in Syracuse. PT Barnum, unable to purchase the Giant, made a replica which also attracted large crowds. The Cardiff Giant has been residing at the Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown Museum since 1947.
