Polaris “Tip of the Week”

Be very careful when using the bulk change function in Record Sets.  Do NOT change the Record Owner. The Record Owner should always be your library with the abbreviation (br) after it.  There should be no reason to ever check this box or change what is currently there. What you should be checking is the Assigned Branch box. Checking this box allows you to select your library from the drop down list. Changing the Record Owner will adversely affect your permission to access and delete item records.

Books Abound Conference
November 15th at the Owego Treadway Inn

Keynote authors this year are Peter McCarty and Esme Raji Codell. Even if you haven’t read the books, come to hear the speakers! Peter McCarty is the author and illustrator of Hondo and Fabian and many other favorites: http://www.petermccarty.net/ .  Esme Raji Codell is the author of How to Get Your Child to Love Reading.  She’s one of my favorites for supporting kids reading books they like!  Check out her website if you haven’t already: http://www.planetesme.com/. On Wednesday, November 14, the night before, there will be a dessert reception courtesy of Senator Libous and the Four County Library System.  A $50 registration is required. Fees include breakfast and lunch. The cost of lodging is not included in the conference price. Each participant will enjoy two discussion groups, led by local LMS facilitators.  You don’t want to miss this event.  It’s not too late to register.  Please contact me if you need a registration form. Annette@flls.org

Hope to see you there.

DATABASES – Rosetta Stone Reminder

Rosetta Stone Ltd. “has decided to discontinue access online for public libraries” beyond the end of our current contract which ends January 31, 2008. As a result, we are exploring other options. I have been in contact with the vendor Auralog which offers the language instruction product, Tell Me More. We are arranging for a trial of this online learning tool and I am counting on you to explore this new product and provide feedback.

DATABASES – Learning Express

Please note that when you register to be a new user on Learning Express, the Username is your library card number. Otherwise you will get the error message: “We could not verify your library subscription.” Remind your users to jot down their password; there is space to do so on the Learning Express bookmarks I distributed.

Once an account has been created, you must click on Returning User before you enter your Username and Password. Otherwise, you get the error message: “Username already exists.”

If you have forgotten your password, you will have to contact Learning Express at 800-295-9556 ext.2 on M – F, 9 am to 5 pm or email them at: libraries@learningexpressllc.com. You should get a response within 24 hours.

Call or email me if you would like help in exploring this new database.

Downloadable Audio Books and eBooks Available this Monday (November 12th)!

All member libraries should have received a supply of promotional bookmarks and ‘business cards’ to help get the word out about how to access the service.  Please contact me if you did not receive them.

Also, please be aware, that only patrons with a valid library card, in good standing, can use the service.  Like all database access, if the patron has a block on their record, they will not be able to download titles.

If you have questions, please contact Annette Birdsall (annette@flls.org; ext. 27) or Marisa Iacobucci (marisa@flls.org ; ext. 26)
