Microsoft Publisher Workshops

Several people have asked me what version of Publisher we will be using to teach the Basic Publisher classes in September.  The version on the laptops is 2003.  If you have an older version, I want to encourage you to consider coming anyway.  Much of the class is not only how to move around Publisher, but also designing a pleasing flyer or brochure.   Please don’t hesitate to ask me more questions.

If you are interested in attending one of the workshops* being offered, please RSVP to Marisa via e-mail by August 10, 2007.

In the body of the e-mail please include:

      1. Your name

            2. Your library

      3. The date & location of the workshop you’re interested in attending.

Possible Dates & Locations (all workshops are 9:00—noon):

                                    9/5/07       Trumansburg

                                    9/7/07       FLLS

                                    9/10/07    Candor

                                    9/12/07    McGraw

                                    9/19/07    Weedsport

*NOTE: Please be sure you have access to Publisher on at least one of the computers in your library prior to registering; you must have basic Windows skills (i.e.—cut & paste, using the mouse including right clicking, inserting…) to be able to participate in this class.

Playaways are here!

All member libraries (with the exception of those who have collections in their library) will be receiving information about Playaways in their delivery next week.

You will receive a list of ‘Rules of Use’, a flyer to put at your circ desk – if you still have the acrylic easel from the advocacy information, I encourage you to use it – and two lists of all available titles, one by genre and one by author.

If your patrons are interested in requesting a Playaway, they can search by title and select the Playaway version of the book.  They will recognize that it’s a Playaway because the description in the record will say ‘1 sound media player’.

Patrons can also search by keyword using the word ‘Playaway’ and it will bring up all the titles in the system.

If you have any questions, please contact me!

Enjoy!

Are you missing the Circulation Summary Report? That report, previously available in 3.2 gave you the number of holds placed, filled and cancelled, plus a summary of circulation activity for a specific time period. That report has been replaced in 3.3. In Polaris 3.3, from the Shortcut bar, there is a report available that will give you the same information and more. It’s titled The Statistical Summary Report.

  • Under the Utilities Menu

  • Reports and Notices

  • System Folder

  • Statistical Summary

  • In the Report Setup Wizard window, select the Beginning and Ending Date

  • Select your library from the drop down list

  • Leave the Summary Only box as False

  • Left Click on Submit

Note: Holds Placed, Holds Cancelled in the PAC Statistics section is not accurate and has been reported to Polaris.

Youth News

Harry Potter is in the House!  You will be receiving your copies beginning next week.  Please remember that they are not to be read, distributed or displayed until July 21st as per your agreements.  No exceptions.  Thanks and Have Fun!

ILL Reminders

1. Please do not renew any item that has a hold.

If a Transfer Hold box appears when you attempt to renew an item (see below), you have two choices.

If you select Yes, the item is checked in and you will generate an In-Transit receipt to fill the hold.

If you select Cancel, nothing will change; the item will still be on the patron’s card with the same due date. When you check the item in, you will generate an In-Transit receipt to fill the hold.

Never select No. It is the underlying understanding and practice that items that have holds may not be renewed. However, if you inadvertently select No, please be sure to select Yes to the Reactivate Hold box (see below) so that the hold is still connected to the item.

2. Please do not cancel a hold request of another library’s patron

If you are unable to fill a hold request that appears on your Request Manager report, double click on the hold to open the hold record, and always select Deny Hold either by selecting the icon below

Or selecting Tools → Deny Hold

You will then be prompted to select a reason for denying the hold.

Databases – Test Preparation Trials

We have heard from several libraries that they are interested in a test preparation database and so have arranged simultaneous trials of two such products; one is Gale’s Testing & Education Reference Center w/ Career Module and the other is from Learning Express, which you may have seen before.  It is important that you try them both, compare them, and give me feedback about what you like and don’t like about each and whether you have a preference. Share this information with your staff, volunteers, and board members. Publicize the trials and encourage your patrons to also try out the databases. I will be sending you additional information about both databases and specific evaluative considerations next week.
