Three Libraries Get Together – Action Plans Evolve!
Sally Eller, Vice-President, Edith B. Ford Memorial Library, Ovid
Trustees and Directors of the 3 smallest libraries in southern Seneca County met on April 7 for a joint training session on the Rural Library Sustaining Project (RLSP). The focus of this training was a grass-roots effort to address the mutual problem of these libraries - the Public Access Computing (PAC) capacity in our 3 libraries is inadequate to meet the needs of today’s patrons.
The three libraries that were represented at this training were the Interlaken Public Library, the Lodi Whittier Library, and the Edith B. Ford Memorial Library in Ovid. The one and a half hour training session was organized and presented by Karel Titus, president of the Board of Lodi Whittier, Sally Eller, vice-president of Edith B. Ford Memorial (EBFML) and Eilene Moeri, Director of EBFML.
The session focused on a brief review of the RLSP and the new round of grants that will soon become available from the Gates Foundation. The presenters emphasized that this generous funding program requires a series of steps to update PACs in our libraries rather than just purchasing the hardware.
The RLSP Continuum of seven topics that should be addressed in this process was emphasized as well as the Action Planning worksheets. The online tools of WebJunction and TechAtlas which are vital to this planning and implementation process were introduced.
This was new material for most of the participants and heads were buzzing! All in all, it was a successful afternoon, with lots of follow-ups offered. We anticipate future joint sessions of these library representatives, for mutual understanding and support in the venture toward more computing capability for our patrons!

A copy of the periodical “Farming: the journal of northeast agriculture” came in without any library key on the process form. Does anyone recognize this title? If so, please contact me.

Reminder:

Polaris “Tip of the Week”
You have a stack of Adult Fiction books and you need to add the item records. There’s a quick and easy way to duplicate the first item record and then change only the barcode, call number and the BIB record for the next one. The collection code, material type, loan period, statistical code, etc. are all duplicated.
Search for the first BIB record using the Find Tool
Open up the Bib record by double clicking on it.
Go to Links, Create, Item Record
The New Item Record Options Box opens up. Select the correct template from the drop down list, left click on OK
Attach a barcode to the item, set the hold parameters if necessary and the correct call number.
Save the item
Left click on the white piece of paper and select Copy Existing Work Form, then click on OK.
A new Item Record workform will open with the same information. Assign a barcode to this next item.
Now search for the appropriate Bib record by left clicking on Find button next to the Bib Control number.
Double click on the Bib record in the Find Tool results list. This will populate the title and author fields with the new information.
Enter the correct call number, etc. and save the record.
Have another Adult Fiction book? Do the same thing. Left click on the white piece of paper, copy existing workform, assign the barcode, click on the find button, search for the appropriate Bib record, open it up and make your changes. See how simple and time saving that is?

WEBSITES - Librarianship
The NYS Library and Dept. of Education has created a website for people interested in a career in libraries. You can learn about: different types of libraries, reasons to become a librarian, job opportunities, educational requirements, and how a degree in information science can prepare you for a career outside of libraries at http://www.librarycareersny.org/.
New data on U.S. libraries shows almost two billion served ALA recently released the State of America’s Libraries report. It states that “even as libraries continue to evolve their services in response to changing needs and technologies …. people continue to go to their public library to read or check out a book in record numbers. Overall circulation at public libraries in the U.S. rose by 28 percent during the decade, partly driven by significant growth in circulation of children's materials, which grew by 44 percent.” A full copy of the 2007 State of America's Libraries is available at www.ala.org/2007State.
