MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN

No. 07-12                                                                                                                  March 23, 2007

Information regarding the NYSALB Conference for Trustees and scholarships for two member trustees was in the delivery bags this week.  Please share with your trustees ASAP…the early registration deadline is soon.

A new custom report has been added to Report Manager. It is entitled AA-Items with In-Transit Status. This report lists items that have a status of In-Transit and are supposed to be in-route to your library and the status was set 15 or more days ago.  You should verify that the items listed [From] or [To] your library are not in your library.  If an item is found in your library you should Check In the item and shelve it or return it as prompted by Polaris.  This is a System-wide report.

Here is what the report looks like:

Are you a Library Trustee interested in conversing with other Trustees about library concerns??

FLLS now has a trustee listserv, for trustees only.  This allows trustees a forum to discuss issues surrounding libraries, such as funding, building issues, personnel and policies, with other library trustees.  The listserv is now up and running!

If you are a trustee in the Finger Lakes Library System, and are interested in joining our new trustee listserv, please contact me: ext. 26 or marisa@flls.org

The New York State Newspaper Project is Complete!

The New York State Newspaper Project, located at the NYS Library, ceased operation on January 31, 2007, after almost twenty years locating, cataloging, and preserving New York State newspapers. The Project was responsible for filming over 4.37 million pages of New York State newspapers.

As part of the United States Newspaper Program (USNP), and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Project staff  inventoried 1,759 newspaper repositories, cataloged 22,785 distinct newspaper titles, with 10,537 of those published in New York State, and created 66,065 local holdings records with issue-specific data. Newspapers were microfilmed and added to the State Library’s collection, making the papers available on-site to patrons and available through interlibrary loan. A copy of the film was also provided at no cost to the institution loaning the newspapers.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff members over the years, access to once unknown New York newspaper collections, and the rich history of the state uniquely told in their pages, is available today.

Information about newspapers in the State Library’s collection, and a link to the Project’s database of microfilmed and original New York State newspapers searchable by city, county or title are available on the Library’s web site at http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp

Questions or comments about the Project should be directed to Jeff Sohn at the State Library by phone (518) 474-7491 or e-mail jsohn@mail.nysed.gov.
