New Book Group Kit
We have a new Book Group Kit available – The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.
Are you a Library Trustee interested in conversing with other Trustees about library concerns??
FLLS is starting a trustee listserv, for trustees only. This will give trustees a forum to discuss issues surrounding libraries, such as funding, building issues, personnel and policies, with other library trustees. I hope to set up and begin the listserv by late February. After last week’s bulletin, I’ve received a number of responses. I will be contacting those who are signing up soon. Thanks!
If you are a trustee in the Finger Lakes Library System, and are interested in joining our new trustee listserv, please contact me: ext. 26 or marisa@flls.org.
I am still working on Purging Inactive Patrons. However there are a few libraries I have not heard from yet.
They are: ALTER, AURO, HOM, and NEVA.
The following libraries need to let me know when they are finished examining the patron record set I created so I can go ahead and purge those patrons: APAL, BERK, MOR, NEW, NIC, OVID, POP, SPE, TCPL, WAT and WAV.
However if you are still working on your Annual Report, this can wait until that report is submitted.
Thank you!
Polaris Tip of the Week
If you access Reports off the Utility Menu on the Polaris Shortcut Bar, you may not see the Custom Folder, where all the custom reports are located. If the Custom Folder does not show up on the list, you may need to left click on the Refresh button in order for it to display.

ILL
Please do not renew any out-of-system ILL books without consulting ILL staff. Each of the many libraries that send us items has different lending and renewal policies. If a patron needs additional time, contact June Gilligan, 273-4074, ext 42 at least three days before the due date. This will give us the time to request and get approval for a new due date. When we know that there are absolutely no renewals we will indicate so on the orange date due slip. However, the absence of this information does not mean you are permitted to renew the item. Thanks for your cooperation.

Last Week’s Question of the Week Do all snow geese have white plumage?
Sally Sutcliffe, TRU emailed me that “until recently the Blue Geese, as the dark birds were called, were considered a separate species. They are now recognized as merely a dark form (or “morph”) of the Snow Goose”. This comes from the Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology which is a wonderful resource for all bird watcher’s.
I learned that “there are three varieties of snow geese: the greater; the lesser; and the blue snow goose…The greater and lesser share the same white plumage and differ only in size. The blue goose has gray plumage with blue tinges on its wings and back…It is thought that snow geese have the largest population of all the other geese and that they are also the noisiest, loudest-honking species.”1
1 Encyclopedia of Animals (EBSCOHost) (2006)
This information can be accessed through several of the Databases listed under Homework Help. (See below) Both Encyclopedia of Animals and Primary Search Magazine have the typical EBSCOHost search screen. However, Kids Search has a kid-friendly search screen and the article includes a photograph of a snow goose.

You will need to be sure that Popups Allowed is switched on so that you can navigate through the databases.
This Week’s Question of the Week Feb. 23 marks the 110th anniversary of the candy, “Tootsie Roll”. How did the candy get its name? What role did Tootsie Rolls play in World War II?
