Polaris Tip of the Week:

A new custom report has been added to Report Manager on the Web. It can be found in the Custom/Cataloging/Item folder and is entitled AA-Pre - Inventory Call Number Verification.

This report can be used to identify and correct call number problems. It’s especially useful to run this report prior to conducting an inventory. When the Polaris Inventory Manger loads a call number range, it displays in shelf order. If your item records have incorrect call numbers in Polaris, this may affect how it displays in the Inventory Manager. This report is also useful for identifying items that have incorrect collection codes. If you select an Adult Fiction collection code to display and you see Non Fiction call numbers assigned, those need to be corrected.

  •  Select your library from the drop down list

  • Select the Collection Code from the drop down list

  • Click on View Report

  • If any errors display, you can copy and paste the barcode into the Item Record Find Tool to search for those item records and fix them.

Are you a Library Trustee interested in conversing with other Trustees about library concerns??

FLLS is starting a trustee listserv, for trustees only.  This will give trustees a forum to discuss issues surrounding libraries, such as funding, building issues, personnel and policies, with other library trustees.  I hope to set up and begin the listserv by late February, though so far I have had only one response.

If you are a trustee in the Finger Lakes Library System, and are interested in joining our new trustee listserv, please contact me: ext. 26 or marisa@flls.org.

Last Week’s Question of the Week: Recent weather forecasts have predicted single digit temperatures with wind chills in negative territory. What exactly is “wind chill”?

I found several articles in the General Science Collection database that discuss wind chill. Here are some definitions:

“combines air temperature and wind speed to come up with a reading of what it really feels like outside”1

“the temperature in still air that would cause the same rate of heat loss from exposed skin as that brought about by prevailing winds…for example, a 10-mile-per-hour wind on a 20-degree day has the same chilling effect as a calm 3-degree day. Hence the wind-chill temperature is 3 degrees.”2

The new wind chill chart was adopted by the National Weather Service in November 2001. Researchers used a wind tunnel and measured wind and temperature combined with the skin temperature and heat loss in the faces of their human subjects.3

Julia, GRO, sent in these websites:

www.weather.com (The Weather Channel) has a definition of Wind Chill Index in their glossary, with a link to a page that shows a Wind Chill Index table: http://www.weather.com/encyclopedia/charts/wind_chill.html

The National Weather Service also has a glossary including definitions of several wind chill terms at: http://www.weather.gov/glossary/index.php?letter=w

Julia also wants to let FLLS libraries know about Drew Montreuil, one of their high school aides who is an aspiring meteorologists. He maintains a website at http://www.grotonweather.com .
