 Training Topics Survey

In last weeks bulletin I included a link to a survey regarding the 2007 proposed training topics. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=367563231556

Thanks to all who have filled it out already. If you have not submitted a survey, please take the time to do so. Please make sure you answer ALL the questions.  When you submit the survey, it does take you back to the home page of www.surveymonkey.com . There is nothing I can do about that. You do not have to sign up, just close the page.

Polaris Tip of the Week:

Purging Inactive Patrons

I recently sent around a Purge Inactive Patron form for you to fill out. This form identifies patrons who have not used the library for a specified period of time (usually 3 years) and who owe equal to or less than the fine amount indicated. Instead of emailing the list of prospective patrons that will be purged, I have added those names to a patron record set. Please examine this record set and if all these patrons can be deleted, let me know and I will purge them for you. Here are some instructions to find the record set so you can view these patrons.

  1. From the Polaris Shortcut Bar

  2. Select Patron Services

  3. Select Record Sets

In the For box type in your library code (NIC)
The Record Set is entitled NIC Purged Patrons

Double Click to open it up.

If you want to look at a record in Patron Status, Right click on the name and Select Status.

To remove a patron from the list, highlight the name and left click on the Minus sign

To Print the List, Left Click on the down arrow next to the Printer icon and Select Record Set

 Advocacy Information

You will have received Advocacy information in your delivery, which includes a flyer for display and brochures for your patrons.  Please encourage your staff and patrons to contact their local legislators!  Thanks!

REMINDER: The Annual Report is due to be submitted to FLLS by Wednesday, February 14th

Now, realistically I know that not everyone will submit their reports by that date, but please submit them as soon as possible.  I need to review each report, section by section, before they can be submitted to Albany by March 1st.  Thank you for your efforts!

Grant Opportunity! (My apologies for not getting this information to you sooner, I just found out about it…)

Amazon Launches '”Wish for Lit" $21 K in Prizes for Libraries

Amazon.com has launched a program that will award a total of $21,000 to three U.S. libraries, $7000 in each of three categories - K-12, academic, and public. "Wish for Lit" was announced at the recent American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting, as the Seattle-based online giant "wanted to do something special for the library community," Amazon.com spokesperson Tony Small told Library Hotline.

Libraries wanting a chance to win a $5000 Amazon.com gift certificate and up to $2000 of Amazon.com products should fill out an entry form at www.amazon.com/wishforlit ; deadline February 16. Along with a library wish list, submissions should include details about special circumstances, how the gift certificate would be used, and why your library deserves the award. Five judges from the ALA's Chapter Relations Committee will evaluate submissions for quality of application, urgency of need, and value of award to the library/community.

Although Amazon.com has offered wish list capability for some time, it recently announced a new feature frequently requested by librarians, noted Small. Now multiple people can contribute to one wish list, making it easier for several staffers to participate. Even libraries that don't win can benefit from a wish list, said Sean Sundwall, another Amazon.com spokesperson. It's a way to help identify some needs out there, he said, adding, "it brings greater visibility to libraries."

Upcoming Workshop

SCRLC is proud to announce that on Friday, March 2, 2007, Kenneth Crews will present "Copyright Law and the Digital Library: Trends, Fair Use, and New Possibilities." Professor Crews has been an invited speaker on campuses and at conferences in more than 40 states and on five continents; his publications encompass the fields of copyright, constitutional law, political history, and library science. This one day workshop at Tompkins County Public Library (Ithaca, NY) will discuss 'fair use' in research and teaching, library copying for preservation and digitization, as well as the rapidly evolving field of website and multimedia development.

Bring your questions and join in an overview of key principles and dynamic developments as technology, creative scholarship, and the law struggle to co-exist. Due to Mr. Crews' reputation and credentials, we expect his presentation to be very popular, so please register early!

Please help us to spread the word about this event to colleagues and co-workers who may be interested. Information about all SCRLC workshops and events is available on our website at http://www.lakenet.org/scrlc/calendar.html

Last Week’s Question of the Week: This weekend’s Super Bowl XLI was historic because for the first time a team led by an African-American coach is playing in the Super Bowl; more significantly both teams playing this year have African-American coaches: Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Colts and Lovie Smith, Chicago Bears.  In keeping with the theme of African-American great athletes, who were William Henry Lewis and Charles Follis, aka “Black Cyclone from Wooster”?

Julia, GRO found that:

"William Henry Lewis was the first black player in major college football in 1889." (Drape, Joe. "Changing the Face of Texas Football", New York Times; 12/23/2005, Vol. 155 Issue 53437, Retrieved from MasterFile Select (EBSCOhost).)

"Charles W. Follis, first African American to play professional football, was born on April 11, 1881." (THIS WEEK IN BLACK HISTORY. New York Amsterdam News; 4/8/2004, Vol. 95 Issue 15, p4. Retrieved from MasterFile Select (EBSCOhost).

According to Jim Crow and Sports, William Henry Lewis was also the first African-American All-American; he played center for Amherst College and went on to Harvard Law School. Charles W. Follis played professional football on the regional level with the Shelby Athletic Association; after a football injury he went on to play Negro League baseball. Interestingly, the singer Paul Robeson also played professional football for two years.

From 1933 to 1946, the NFL excluded African-American players. The last team to finally integrate was the Washington Redskins (1962) and they were the first team to win a Super Bowl led by an African-American quarterback (Doug Williams, 1988).

This Week’s Question of the Week:  Recent weather forecasts have predicted single digit temperatures with wind chills in negative territory. What exactly is “wind chill”?
