No. 06-46                                                                                                                  November 17, 2006

Reminder: Finger Lakes Library Sytem will be closed

Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24.

I will be out of the office from Mon., Nov. 20 through Friday, Nov. 24. If you need sheets of spine labels, barcodes, process slips, or mylar book jackets, please email Margaret Rosen at mrosen@flls.org or call her at extension 33.

ILL

  • There will be no deliveries on Thursday and Friday of next week

When creating an “on the fly” record for an out-of-system ILL please be sure that you select 16  ILL for the Material type, Loan period code, and Fine code. This will prevent the patron from renewing the item by his or herself.  If the patron needs the item renewed, notify us and we will request a renewal from the lending library but, unfortunately, there are no guarantees.

Databases If you did not pick it up a packet of ReferenceUSA information at the FALCONS meeting, look for it in the delivery; it includes, search tips and promotional material

“Whether for research, quick facts, or simply curiosity FedStats.gov is a gateway to statistical information from the U.S. Government. With the ability to search by subject, geographical area, or within a particular agency, FedStats.gov is a statistical smorgasbord of information!” [Flavors of Reference: Best of Reference 2006, NYPL]

Last Week’s Question of the Week: President Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. Please find some online sites with the full text of this remarkable speech.  Julia Lon, TRU, and Julia Schult, GRO recommended the websites below:

Annual Reports

I just wanted to remind you all that the 2006 Annual Report is available in PDF format on the Division of Library Development web site.  Please print out a copy and start thinking about filling it in as soon as possible.  Even though the deadline for submission is the usual February 14th, we all know that comes faster than we think!

The Bibliostat Collect site is currently NOT yet ready.  I will contact you as soon as it is up and running.

Share the Bulletin

Last week we put a small reminder in the bulletin about sharing it with staff.  I wanted to just reiterate how important it for directors to share the bulletin with staff and volunteers.  We really appreciate the wider coverage and knowing that Polaris tips (for example) and other dated announcements get out there.  Thanks!

Polaris “Tip of the Week”

You have this really worn copy of a Robin Cook book entitled “Fever”.   Should you replace it or discard it?

How many times has it circulated? Over all, this year?

When was the last time it went out? When was it added originally?
All these factors determine whether you replace the item or discard it.
All this information can be found on the Properties screen of the item record.

This is how you access that information.

  1. Search for the item using Cataloging/Item Records, this brings up the Find Tool

  2. Limit by your library and by collection if desired

  3. Search by title or barcode for the specific item

  1. Highlight the item and Right Click, this window displays

  2. Left Click on Properties

This window displays

The General Tab displays the current Circulation Status and the Last Circulation Date

  • Left click on the About Tab.

The About Tab displays the Year to Date Circulation, The Lifetime Circulation and the date the item was added (the Creation date)

This information can also be accessed by opening up the Item Record and selecting the Properties icon.
