Don’t miss the Growing A Reader Workshop

October 17, Growing A Reader Workshop.  Register now at http://earlyliteracy.sals.edu

Library staff will be able to assist parents in gaining the skills they need to help their children come to school prepared and ready to learn to read, thereby positioning libraries as experts in early literacy.  Work together with early literacy agencies in your community as you grow new readers.  Hope to see your there.  Workshop is all day, lunch will be provided. 9-9:30am in the Borg Warner Room of Tompkins County Public Library.

There is still time to register for the Novel Database workshops. The first series will explore the Health and Wellness Resource Center with Alt Health, Health Reference Center and a few other online remedies. See detailed description below. These workshops will give you and your staff the tools and confidence to assist patrons in their search for answers to most of their health related concerns. As an incentive to attend the training, $20 will be awarded per participant. These workshops will run from 9-11am.

NOVEL – The Panacea to Your Health Questions

Dates, locations and deadlines to register are listed below.

What is fugu poisoning?  Can you recommend a few alternative therapies for insomnia?  Do you have any health journals I can use for my class project?  What are some possible treatments for indigestion?

Do questions like these make their way to your service desk?  If so, then we have a training class for you!  Join TCPL Reference Librarian Jennifer Schlossberg as she guides you through Health and Wellness Resource Center with Alt Health, Health Reference Center, and a few other online remedies.  You will learn the scope of these databases, their strengths and weaknesses, and good searching techniques to answer the array of questions you get from your patrons.  You will even get a chance to roam around in each database as there will be laptops for your use.

 Polaris “Tip of the Week”

A new custom report has been added. It is entitled AA-Circ counts by library by material type by collection by statistical code. This report will give you circ counts for your library within a period of time broken down by material type and then collection and then statistical code.  Click on the "+" to drill down and display the additional information within each category

Select your library and the Starting and Ending date.
Left Click on View Report

The total use count of all items with a material type of “Book” is displayed on the far right.

Notice the plus sign next to “Book”

Left Clicking on the plus sign opens up a display which breaks down “Book” by collection code

This display gives you use counts by Collection Code

Left clicking on the plus sign next to the Collection Code breaks it down even farther by Statistical Class

This display gives you use counts by Statistical Class

This report does export into Excel with the drill down menu options, however exporting into Adobe Reader as a .pdf file does not.

Last call for annual meeting registrations!

I will accept registrations through October 3rd for the October 11, 2006 Annual Meeting.

      Thanks.

Reminder – Checking in DVDs and Videos

Malia has been finding lately that when she checks in films from deposit collections, more and more films are still checked out to patrons.   When she checks them in they sometimes generate fines for the patron.  We do not waive these fines, so you may find patrons questioning their fines if the films were returned on time.

So, please remind all staff to please check things in!

IMLS Calls for Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Grant Applications

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is calling upon libraries, archives, and library agencies, associations, and consortia to apply for the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant program.

The program supports efforts to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians and the faculty who will prepare them for careers in library science. It also supports grants for research related to library education and library staffing needs, curriculum development, an early career development program for untenured, tenure-track library and information science faculty, and continuing education and training.

Applications, guidelines, and examples of successful proposals can be found on the agency's Web site at http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/21centuryLibrarian.shtm.

The application deadline is December 15, 2006. Awards will be announced in mid-June 2007.

I will be out of the office on Monday, Oct. 2. If you have an immediate question about interlibrary loan please call 273-4074, ext. 43. Otherwise I will get back to you soon after I return on Oct. 3.

ILL

Beginning the week of October 2, there will be four deliveries, Monday -Thursday to the Cortland Library. This should expedite hold requests to and from that library.

Just a reminder – please ask all your staff to use the correct library abbreviation on your In-transit receipts. It truly expedites the unpacking of and distribution to the delivery bags which is so important when you have a short period of time to move hundreds of books.

We had our first training session on the health-related databases this week. Don’t miss out on these remaining training opportunities:

Ø      Newspapers  Oct. 16 (CAN), 20 (FLLS),  Nov. 1 (MCGR), 8 (TRU)  10 (WEED)

Last Question of the Week

What year did NYS reverse legislation that did not allow inmates with life sentences to wed?

I used the Custom Newspapers database and found the following:

“In 1989, New York State reversed legislation that did not allow inmates with life sentences to wed, and marriages surged, officials said, hitting 769 in 1990. No statistics were kept before then.” [Prison Marriages Are on the Increase, Despite Daunting Rates of Failure.(Metropolitan Desk)(Bride Wore White, Groom Hopes for Parole). Donatella Lorch.
The New York Times (Sept 5, 1996)]

This Week’s Question: Oct. 4 the marks the 49th anniversary of Sputnik I, the first satellite to orbit in space. Who was the first human to orbit the earth and what was the name of his spaceship?
