    Polaris “Tip of the Week”

The Polaris Tip in the 6/2 bulletin referred to On the Fly Records. Since that tip was written, Rex has designed a custom report that identifies On the Fly records that need to be cataloged. This report is available using Report Manager on the Web and is in the Cataloging Folder/Item Folder and is entitled AA- On the Fly Items that need Cataloging. Run this report periodically to identify On the Fly Records that need to be added to a permanent BIB record.

Using the Mailing Label Manager

Would you like to print mailing labels for a specific group of patrons? Let’s say you want to mail your book club group notice of an upcoming event.

  •  First identify the book club members by using the local use field in their patron record

  • Under the Utilities Menu, select Mailing Label Manager

  • Left click on the Search by Address icon

This will bring up the Find Tool

  • Under the Options Menu, remove the checkmark by left clicking on it, next to the Close on Open option (this will force the Find Tool to say open displaying your results even after you select a record)

  • Now search for the patrons you have identified in the local use field using the local use field search option in the By box

  • With the name highlighted, press enter

This patron is now in the Mailing Label Manager

  • Use your arrow key to highlight the next name, press enter

This patron is now in the Mailing Label Manager

  • When you have all your patrons added, Save the list
  • From the File Menu, Select Print or left click on the Printer icon
  • Select your Label type

The Print Mailing Label dialog box appears.

  • Select the label type in the Mail Label Template box:

                  Avery 5163 labels are 4 inches x 2 inches.
            Avery 5252 labels are 4 inches x 1.33 inches.

If necessary, type or select the number of labels to skip. (Use this option to print     on a partially used sheet of labels.)

  • Click OK.

The labels are printed at your default workstation printer.

This means that if you are printing from a workstation that only has a receipt printer attached to it, it will print to the receipt printer. You must use a workstation that has a printer other than the receipt printer attached to it and select that printer prior to printing your labels.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape

The online companion to the Library of Congress's exhibition, Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape, 1922-1932, offers a wealth of textual and visual information on the architect and his creations.

According to an article I read, Frank Lloyd Wright could be quite cantankerous. In 1939 Herbert (Hib) Johnson Jr., president of Johnson Wax, hosted a dinner party to show off Wingspread, the new home built for him by Frank Lloyd Wright just north of Racine, Wis. Hardly had the guests been seated than a thunderstorm passed over, and a steady drip began leaking onto Johnson's bald pate. As the table fell silent, the furious Johnson got Wright on the phone and asked him what to do. Wright's reply: `Well, Hib, why don't you move your chair’?''

For all you home renovators, here’s an article that recounts the restoration and finishing of a family home in Willoughby, OH, (http://www.penfieldhouse.com/)

that was one of about 100 homes designed by Wright for “people of more modest means”.  These “Usonian” houses featured minimal ornamentation, open-floor plans centered around the kitchen, built-in furniture, and floor-ceiling windows.

        FYI:

I have not received any new information for the 2006-2007 New York State Construction Grant.  Please keep plugging away with the old forms and I’ll let everyone know as soon as the 2006-07 forms are ready.

       Thanks for being so patient.

 Items on your Request Manager

Several of you have had situations where FLLS items have appeared on your Request Manager that are not in your library.  This could happen for one of two reasons: 1. You have sent your collection back to FLLS but it has not been checked in yet or 2. We have checked a collection out to you that has not arrived in delivery yet.
