MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN
No. 06-16 April 21, 2006
JAN AGUIRRE, Specialist & Training Coordinator
When you run your Request Manger report, the report that lets you know what items you need to pull off the shelf to fill a hold, and you cannot find the item, please DENY the hold. This hold request will continue to display on your Request Manager for the entire 9 day cycle unless you deny the hold request. Once you deny the request, it will move on to the next library in line. If you cannot find your item, change the status to missing. If the requested item is in a deposit collection, and was not found when the collection was returned to FLLS, the FLLS ILL department will update all pertinent fields so the item will display on your Request Manager. This will force you to search for the item. To deny a request, simply click on the “Deny Hold” icon
Select the reason ( Barcode not found or Title not found is fine) and left click on OK

Electronic Databases
I had the occasion to use Twayne's Author Series available through FLLS to respond to ILL out-of-system requests for copies of three short stories by A.S. Byatt that had appeared in three periodicals. The Twayne’s entry on Byatt listed her short stories and in which collections they had been published. Those short story collections were available within our own system and were in the delivery bag the next day.
Twayne’s Author Series offers several book-length entries on several hundred US, English, and world authors. Each entry includes biographical information, lists of works, literary criticism of the work, and additional references. The database can be searched alphabetically. An In-depth Search option is also available where you can search by genre, time period, nationality, or free text; for example, searching for a 19th century American author of children’s literature yielded Louisa May Alcott, Horatio Alger Jr., and Mark Twain. A search for a 20th century British playwright resulted in links to eight names.
Websites
April 18, 2006 marked the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake. Among the many websites commemorating this event is one from the Virtual Museum of the City of San Francisco which has eyewitness accounts of this devastating event. The US Census Bureau has a special San Francisco Earthquake 100th Anniversary Facts which compares the demographics of the area then and now.
Google has produced a Google Search Tips poster, available for downloading and distribution. These tips will help you refine Google searches so that your search results are more relevant. Infopeople has prepared a Best Search Tools Chart which compares features of several search and meta-search engines.
The CIA’s 2006 World Factbook is available online for free. Each entry includes information about a country’s geography, people, government, economy, communications systems, transportation, and military. There are sections on international organizations and flags. This site should be bookmarked for easy access.
