Polaris “Tip of the Week”

When an item record is attached to the wrong BIB record, there is a simple procedure to move that item record from one BIB record to another. Let’s say you notice a regular print item attached to a Large Type edition and you want to move the item record to the correct Bib record. It’s a simple matter of changing the BIB control number.

Search for the Regular type edition of the same title. Write down the Control Number of the Regular Print edition, in this case 186354 ****

****

Open your Item Record that’s attached to the Large Type edition

In the Bib control number field, change the number to the control number of the Regular Print edition; so you would change 191596 to 186354. ***

Save the record. Your item record is now attached to the correct BIB record.

That’s all there is to it!

Homeless DVD

A DVD copy of the film “Nothing But Trouble” appeared on Joyce’s desk with no paperwork or library stamp.

If this is your copy, please e-mail me and I’ll send it on to you.

Reminder to Those Attending the ABLE Workshop

To all those attending next week’s workshop “Your Library’s Financial Management”:

Please remember to bring copies of the following documents (and a calculator) if possible (if you cannot find them all, just bring what you can round up):

¨       Your library’s most recent NY State Annual Report

¨       Bylaws of the Board of Trustees

¨       Long-Range Plan

¨       Most recent audit

¨       Current operating budget

¨       Last month’s, or most recent, financial reports

Also, if you had trouble with filling out the questionnaire, please don’t worry.  These forms are just to help the trainer gear the workshop to your needs.

See you next week!

Dell Computer Configurations

The OptiPlex family of computers that FLLS recommends for library use usually change every October.  In 2005 the major change was the removal of the PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports.  For public internet stations and PowerPAC computers this change makes no difference and has no impact on how the computers operate in your library.

The change, however, will possibly have an impact to you when upgrading or purchasing new circulation and/or tech services computers that have barcode scanners.  Any library that currently has a wand barcode scanner or an older model Percon gun will have to upgrade to a new HHP scanner (formerly Welch Allyn) with a USB cable interface.  If you currently have an HHP or Welch Allyn scanner and upgrade your circulation computer it will require a new cable only.

New HHP scanners with the USB cable are approximately $225.  USB scanner cables are a $35 upgrade.

This takes effect with all new computer purchases after April 13, 2006.  If you have a new circulation computer in the pipeline prior to this date no changes are needed.

This information will also be added to the Recommended CIRC and PAC Configuration page on our web site.
