Correct 2-step procedure to Log On to Polaris:
- The FIRST step is logging into the Remote desktop. This is done by double clicking on the Remote desktop icon on your desktop. This connects you to the server here at FLLS.
- The SECOND step is to log into Polaris. This is done by double clicking on the Polaris icon on your desktop.
Logging off is done in reverse order. Just remember: 2 steps log on = 2 steps log off.
Correct 2-step procedure to “Log Off” from Polaris:
The FIRST step to log off from Polaris is done by accessing the File Menu and selecting “Log Off”.
Or you may use the “control key” and letter “L” key.
2. The SECOND step to log off from the remote desktop is done by left clicking on the Start button and selecting “Log Off.”
What not to do:
Clicking on the X in the right hand corner of the Polaris Toolbar does NOT log you off from Polaris.
Never, ever click on the black X in the Remote Desktop Toolbar. This does NOT log you off from the Remote Desktop. You MUST go to Start and Log Off.
Just because you log off from Polaris does not mean you have logged off from the Remote Desktop.
When you fail to complete this second step, you are still logged into Polaris. Please when logging off, fully complete the two steps.
REMINDER:
There is a Polaris New User Workshop scheduled for Monday, March 13th at the FLLS Conference room from 9 am - 12 Noon.
This workshop is geared towards staff that has little or no experience with Polaris.
Registration deadline is March 8th.
Please contact Jan Aguirre to register.

Newspaper Electronic Databases
Whether you want to search for articles about a particular subject or browse last week’s issues of the San Francisco Chronicle, your library patrons have access to more than 150 newspapers in the USA and abroad through several of our subscription databases:
Custom Newspapers (Gale/Novel) includes the greatest number of publications, including the Boston Herald, Christian Sun Monitor, Daily Telegraph (London) New York Times, to name just a few. You can view all of the titles if you click Browse in the section: Limit the current search. By clicking About Custom Newspapers which appears at the bottom of every screen, you can link to Search Tips and a Navigation Guide which describes how to use this database effectively
A subset of NYS newspapers are in New York State Newspapers (Gale/Novel) which indexes Buffalo News, Herald American, New York Observer, New York Post, New York Times, and Post Standard. All of these publications are also included in Custom Newspapers (Gale/Novel)
NewsBankinc indexes 23 newspapers from across the USA; (only four NYS papers are duplicated in Custom Newspapers). This database also includes: The Ithaca Journal, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, LA Times, Miami Herald, Philadelphia Inquirer, Press & Sun Bulletin Syracuse Herald Journal, and Washington Post. You can access a Tutorial (upper right hand part of page) from any search page; it is an interactive pdf describing the features of the database and searching strategies.
