MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN
No. 05-44 December 22, 2005
Happy Holidays from all of us at FLLS!
CAROL HENDRIX, Administration
1. Finger Lakes Library System will be closed December 23-26, 2005. We will open for business on Tuesday, December 27, 2005.
2. Second chance to submit an article for your library for the Winter issue…extended deadline is December 28th . Please e-mail your information to me. Thanks.
ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Cataloging Services
1. I will be out of the office from Friday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Jan. 2. I will return on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
2. Polaris Quick bib procedure change. This change is for those member libraries that choose to use Quick bibs for circulating your new titles as fast as possible.
Effective immediately, it will not be necessary to send in vendor cards, Polaris update forms, printouts, or photocopies for new titles that you find existing and qualifying Quick bibs created by another member library on Polaris. By qualifying, I mean that there must be an exact match to the item in hand on either the ISBN (MARC tag 020), the UPC/EAN code (MARC tag 024), or both.
However, if you do not find an existing and qualifying Quick bib or permanent bib record on Polaris, and you wish to create one using one of the four Quick bib templates available on Polaris, be sure to fill out the Polaris Quick bib template correctly, and send the card, form, printout, or photocopy to FLLS with a clearly indicated notation that a Quick bib has been created.
If you do not use Polaris Quick bibs, continue to send in cards, forms, printouts, and photocopies for new holdings that you would like FLLS to add to new or existing bib records.
Hopefully, this will reduce the amount of paperwork you need to submit, as well as speed up the overall cataloging process.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
JAN AGUIRRE, Specialist & Training Coordinator
Polaris Tip of the Week:
Did you know that you can place multiple holds for the same patron by holding down the control key and selecting more than one record at a time and then press the enter key?
For example, a patron discovers a new author and wants to reserve several books by that author. Using Patron Status, find the correct patron and left click on the Place Hold icon. Left click on the Find button located next to the Title field in the Bibliographic section of the Hold Request workform. Using the Find Tool, search by author and using the control key, select several records from the results screen, this highlights the selected records. With the records highlighted, press the enter key. All selected records are now added to the Hold Request workform. This technique is very useful when a patron wants to place holds on several item records on the same subject also.

Annual Reports News
1. I will be having a mini- workshop on the Annual Report on Tuesday, January 24, 2006, 9:30 – noon in the FLLS conference room.
This workshop is designed for new directors, or anyone who is doing the report for the first time. I will be sending out a flyer to all libraries, but ask that you only plan on attending if you are new to the Annual Report ‘scene’.
2. For those who would like to come to FLLS to input your Annual Report data, the conference room will be available for laptop set up on the following dates, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm:
Monday, January 16th
Tuesday, January 17th
Wednesday, January 25th
Thursday, January 26th
These dates are based on the assumption that the Bibliostat site will be up and running – it had better be! I will be available to answer questions you have while you’re inputting your data. A flyer will also be going out regarding this, and I will be asking you to sign up ahead of time.
I will be sending a memo with your annual report information (password, login, vender reimbursement figure, etc.) to you before the end of December.
LINDA BEINS, ILL/Reference Coordinator
I am eager to provide assistance with your reference inquiries. Please email, call, or send questions that come up and I will try to find answers to them.
When sending in an ILL request, please ask your patrons if FLLS may substitute another title for the one requested. If we see that a substitute is OK, it will expedite the process if the requested title is unavailable.

The article Plants of the winter solstice. Hayward Benning; Conservationist, Nov 1993 v48 n2 p30(5), available on Gales’ InfoTrac General Reference Center through FLLS’ Electronic Databases, describes the various plants associated with this holiday season. Check out the database or let me know if you would like me to email the full text of this article to you.
