      ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Cataloging Services

1.      Earlier this summer before the migration in July, the number of books, videos and sound recordings sent in for cataloging and processing could easily fill up five book carts. This is not the situation now. We currently have about thirty book carts filled with materials, and as a consequence, we’re really short of room to store new arrivals. The origins of this tsunami of materials, many of which are sent in because they need physical processing (i.e. labels and/or mylar jackets), is less important than how they should be handled by FLLS, and in the most fair and expeditious manner possible. We generally process materials sent in for processing on a first-in first-out basis.

I would like to continue this approach, but in order to deal with the current situation I am asking that member libraries prioritize the materials they send in for processing. For example, send in the new releases that you know will be in high demand while holding back the donations and gifts of lesser importance. Another approach is for member libraries to process materials locally instead of sending them in. We have always provided member libraries mylar jackets when this option is determined to be useful. It gets new titles into the hands of patrons a lot faster!

2.  Vendor reimbursement: You have a little over a week (Nov. 15) to submit your request for reimbursement. The sooner all the requests come in, the faster you get reimbursed.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email me.

3.  NOTE: I still haven’t heard about the following book with no property stamp that arrived without a library key on the process slip last week:

“Wordsearch 4:10:2002” by The New York Times
“May I bring a friend” by Beatrice De Regniers

Please contact me if these titles are recognized.

4.  The following books sent in several weeks ago without property stamps or library keys. Several attempts to determine the owners have been made, but to no avail. These books will now be given away at the next system meeting:

“Under the red flag” by Ha Jin
“Let sleeping dogs lie” by John R. Erickson
“Secret laundry monster files” by John R. Erickson
“Canyon quest” by Jim Ware
“Henry and Beezus” by Beverly Cleary
“The mouse and the motorcycle” by Beverly Cleary
“Dr. Ackerman’s book of boxers” by Lowel Ackerman
“Countdown” by Iris Johansen

New Award - New Collaboration – New Opportunity

The New York State Library Association’s Youth Services section (YSS) and School Library Media Section (SLMS) have joined together to create The 3 Apples Book Award.  This is a children’s choice award where the kids will nominate, vote & celebrate their favorite books.  All of this will happen in both school and public libraries. This award has been developed to encourage reading for pleasure and to give children the opportunity to participate in honoring their favorite books.  Check out www.3applesbookaward.org to find out how you can participate!  I will be distributing printed information so please help spread the word and help kids celebrate their favorite books.
