South Central is hosting a training session on How to Teach Novel and Electronic Databases.  The instructor is the same Robert Lackie that provided training for FLLS last year.  We have some money left over from the Gates Sustainability grant that targets training.  We would like to use this money by paying for your registration to this class.  The information and registration form is below.  I have already contacted Nora Hardy at SCRLC and made arrangements to have us billed for your registration.  I have enough money to cover 30 people.  Please consider bringing or sending someone on your staff, the knowledge gained will benefit other staff and your patrons.  This would also be a great to take if your are planning on using the "Trainers Toolbox" in the future.  Please register with Nora at SCRLC.

The following is from SCRLC E-Mail

Greetings -

January 28th seems far away, but it's sooner than you think! Treat yourself (and your patrons) to even better training sessions in 2005. Popular presenter Robert Lackie is coming to the Broome County Public Library (Binghamton, NY) to teach us "How to TEACH Database Searching." This workshop will concentrate on the pedagogy (teaching) skills we need to effectively and enjoyably teach our patrons, students, and coworkers to use the NOVEL and SCRLC Suite of databases. These skills will make ALL of your database and Internet searching training more successful.

No more talking heads and snoozing students! Learn to identify different learning styles and choose appropriate teaching methods.  Do you know how to tell (without tests!) whether your students have actually learned what they need to know? Many library staff have discovered that these skills were not what they learned in school!  Now they need to help patrons learn database searching skills in formal and informal settings.

This class is great for attendees who intend to share what they have learned with other staff at their library.  That really makes the most of your training dollars! All workshop details and registration information appear below.

This presentation is funded in part by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Please help us spread the word to colleagues and coworkers who may be interested in this workshop. Information about all SCRLC workshops and events is available on our web site at http://www.lakenet.org/scrlc/calendar.html

Happy Holidays!

Nora Hardy

NOVEL & the SCRLC Suite:
How to TEACH Database Searching

Date/Time:    Friday, January 28, 2005, 9:30-3:30
Location:       Broome County Public Library, Binghamton, NY
Instructor:       Robert Lackie, Rider University
Registration:  $30/members-SCRLC; $40/non-members; includes lunch.
Audience:      Reference and electronic resources staff and librarians, academic bibliographic instructors, and school media specialists.

Patrons and students need the guidance of informed library searchers to demonstrate how to efficiently pursue their research.  Fortunately, there are tried-and-true methods searchers can use to access this elusive content, and effective ways to communicate these methods to patrons. These methods will be demonstrating the NOVEL and SCRLC databases and can be used in any training session, formal or informal.

Many library staff members have discovered that they have not had enough instruction in pedagogy (i.e., “the art, science, or profession of  teaching”).  This workshop will provide information on learning theories and discuss methods successfully used in teaching, as well as how to select the best methods for each situation. We will also demonstrate and discuss facilitation skills and techniques for use in any environment to keep the learners more interested and actively involved in the session.

By the end of the session, participants will have gained knowledge of and be able to:
Ø     Discuss the important differences between and components of databases vs. search engines/websites
Ø     Explore general advanced searching techniques in databases
Ø     Teach database searching tips and resources
Ø     Describe basic principles of how adults learn
Ø     Identify learning styles and choose appropriate teaching methods
Ø     Apply teaching theory and methods to future instruction sessions
Ø     Make sessions interactive through paraphrasing and questioning techniques

Instructor:
Robert J. Lackie is an Assistant Professor-Librarian at Rider University (Lawrenceville, NJ), where he co-leads the Library Instruction Program. In addition, he has served as Rider’s Faculty-in-Residence from 1998-2002. He is a trainer/evaluator for the NJ Train-the-Trainer Group and the outgoing Chair (2002-2003) of the Association of College & Research Libraries of NJ User Education Committee.

His scholarly interests include e-classroom theory & pedagogy, learning & teaching styles, curriculum development, student development & retention, research methods, and information literacy/teacher training.

This presentation is funded in part by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
