Children’s Yours-to-Keep Videos
By now, everyone who was to receive the children’s videos we were giving away, should have had them delivered to their library.

All the videos should have a record in Dynix and a spine label (with call #) in place.  All you need to do is attach bar codes and add them to your holdings in Dynix,  as well as adding your identifying labels.

If you have any questions about these films, please contact me.  Thanks and enjoy!

“Register to Vote” Web Page Launched
ALA and the advocacy organization Working Assets are cosponsoring “Register to vote@ your library,” a voter-registration page (www.yourvotematters.org/ala) where individuals can register to vote or update their registration information.

The Your Vote Matters site was created and customized by Working Assets for participating nonpartisan, nonprofit organizations.  When citizens register to vote through the site they help raise funds for ALA through a grant from Working Assets.  All donated funds will be used to support the Association’s nationwide library advocacy efforts.

Voters in all states except New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Wyoming are eligible to complete registration via the website.  ALA will award a $1,000 grant to the library that registers the largest number of voters through the site.  Additional grants of $500 will also be given to the first five libraries that register 500 individuals.  Working Assets is also underwriting the costs of producing tip sheets, bookmarks, and buttons for library workers to use in promoting voter registration in their communities.  These materials can be requested online at www.ala.org/requestmaterials/.  They will be mailed to libraries through early September.

For more information, send an e-mail to lcastele@ala.org.

[NOTE:  This a great opportunity to promote voting in your community.  I encourage you to request materials and give this a try.]

A “Basic Windows” workshop is being held regionally during the month of August. This workshop is designed for those staff who have little or no experience working in a Windows-based environment.

Topics covered will be:

  • Understanding the Windows screen
  • Using a mouse
  • Common keyboard commands
  • Working with a Windows program
  • Understanding the parts of a window
  • Minimizing, maximizing, restoring, tiling, closing, resizing and switching between windows
  • Working with folders and files
  • Basic terminology, basic functions & basic skills

One of the goals of this workshop is take the uncertainty and intimidation out of working in a Windows environment; to have participants leave feeling comfortable working with menus, the mouse and windows. These skills are crucial to our future migration from the text- based Dynix system to a Windows environment.

Workshops will be held regionally with the following schedule:

Trumansburg - Wed., Aug. 4th
Candor – Mon.,  Aug. 9th
Weedsport -  Wed., Aug.18th
Homer - Thurs., Sept. 2nd

If you have any questions regarding the training sessions, please feel free to contact me: e-mail: jaguirre@flls.org or phone: 273-4074, ext. 36
