We’ve just been informed that a new EBSCO database has been added to the list of NOVEL Databases. It is the General Science Collection and it is immediately accessible! It is listed under the ‘EBSCOhost & Novelist’ link on our Electronic Resources webpage. Click on the EBSCOHost Web link to get to the list of EBSCO databases (starting with MasterFile Select) and you will see General Science Collection at the end of the list.
“General Science Collection provides information on all aspects of the scientific world, and offers full-text coverage for more than 60 of the most popular science publications, including Archaeology, Astronomy, Discover, National Wildlife, New Scientist, Popular Science, Science News, Scientific American, and many others. Subject areas covered include the observation, description, identification, and experimental investigation of phenomena and the application of science to industrial or commercial objectives. The database also includes Great Scientific Achievements of the Twentieth Century, a multi-volume encyclopedia from Salem Press.”
The New York State Library is also pleased to announce that it has renewed its contract with EBSCO to provide resources for the NOVEL database collection for a three-year period beginning September 1, 2004.
Finger Lakes Library System is participating in a free-trial of the ProQuest genealogy database HeritageQuest Online. The free trial is available until at least June 11th.

If you have any questions about accessing this database please contact me. Also, let me know what you think about this database’s content and ease of use. Is this something that you think patrons at your library would consider to be a worthwhile resource?

Parking in Ithaca
The parking situation in downtown Ithaca has not improved in the last few months, and no one anticipates that it will be getting better. When you come to a workshop or meeting here at the system, here are a couple of hints to help you find parking in the parking garage:
--Try to get here as early as possible. If the workshop/meeting starts at 9:00 or even 9:30, arriving at 8:30 is OK. The earlier you get here, the better chance of your finding a parking space.
--Park in the upper level of the garage. When you come into the lot (from Green St.), take your ticket and go straight up the spiral. Many times there are more spots up there, particularly early in the morning. There are stairs that take you to Green St. and a traffic light for easy crossing.
Trustee Workshop
I just wanted to remind everyone of The FLLS Annual Trustee Workshop: “Fundraising For Libraries in the 21st Century”, Saturday, June 5, 2004, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Ramada Inn, Ithaca, NY.
Mr. Ronald Barrows of the Barrows Group will be presenting this year’s Trustee Workshop on fundraising for libraries. He will address a variety of strategies and techniques for raising financial support that could increase income to your library. His presentation will include practical applications of these strategies and techniques, as well as a question & answer period which will allow you to discuss real challenges facing your own library.
Please try to send at least one trustee to this workshop! Deadline for registration is May 28th. If you did not receive a brochure/registration form in the mail, please contact Carol Hendrix by e-mail (chendrix@flls.org) or phone: 273-4074, ext 21.
