The June System Meeting has been canceled. A two day training session on "Train the trainer" has been scheduled to replace it. Please refer to Jan's announcement below for more information.

I would like to announce that we have promoted Jan Aguirre to "Computer Network Services Specialist and Training Coordinator". Jan will be responsible for assessing the training needs and the development of the process to address those needs. This is an important position that has been unfilled for a very long time and we are happy and excited to have such a capable person to fill it.

The New-ILS committee has been formed. You should have received an announcement about who is on the committee. I encourage you to communicate with your representative from the committee. Tell them what you can't live without or what you can't stand in regards to our current Integrated Library System (ILS) software. Your representative will only be able to look out for your needs if you tell them what they are. Please be involved with the process.

I have been busy setting up demonstrations with the major players in Library Software. I have scheduled four demonstrations for the committee in May and June. This is an exciting time and from what I have seen of the next generation of ILS software, they are packed with interesting features.

TRAIN THE TRAINER WORKSHOP – June 22nd and June 23rd.

Please mark your calendar to attend this important and valuable workshop.

The “Train the Trainer” session is scheduled for June 22 and June 23rd from 9:00 am – 12 Noon in the Borg Warner Room of the Tompkins County Public Library.

Advanced registration is necessary and required. Deadline for registration is June 4th. Attendance will be limited to one representative per member library. The participant should be the person who will be responsible for training the staff in your library.

“What I hear, I forget; What I see, I remember; What I do, I understand.” (Confucius, 451 B.C.) As instruction librarians and teachers/trainers, many of us have either forgotten the logic of Confucius’ statement or we find that we cannot take advantage of its wisdom because we have not had much instruction in the art and science of teaching. In this workshop, we will provide background information on learning theories and discuss the common methods successfully used in teaching the content of today’s workshop, as well as the criteria used to select the best methods for each situation. The presenter will also demonstrate and discuss the facilitation skills and techniques that educators can use in any environment to keep the learners more interested and actively involved in the session.

Participants will gain knowledge of and be able to: Describe basic principles of how adults learn and identify your learning styles and others Apply teaching theory & methods to future instruction sessions Improve instruction using basic facilitation skills Make instruction sessions more interactive through paraphrasing and questioning techniques

The instructor will be Robert J. Lackie, an Assistant Professor-Librarian at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he co-leads the Library Instruction Program, teaching a large percentage of their library instruction. He is a trainer/evaluator for the New Jersey Train-the-Trainer Group and the outgoing chair of the Association of College & Research Libraries of NJ User Education Committee.

Today is the deadline for getting in your permanent loan video selections. If you have not sent it in yet, there is still time! Fax it to me by the end of the day today and it will still count! Thanks!

Soon you will be receiving a memo attached to a form requesting contact information for the Annual Report. Next year I plan on contacting those individuals who do the financial section of your report directly. This way I will be able to send information on deadlines and any handouts that we had at the workshop. Please, please take a few moments to fill out this form and send it back to me. Thank you!

The Onondaga County Public Library is sponsoring a Trustee workshop on Tuesday, April 13, from 6-8pm : “Grants for Library Buildings: Introduction to Three Funding Opportunities”.
