MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN

No. 04-01                                                                                                                       January 9, 2004

I have scheduled an upgrade to the Dynix software for Wednesday, January 28, 2004.  The upgrade should only take an hour but won't be started until 10:00AM that morning.  The upgrade fixes several issues, some behind the scenes and others that are more glaring.  One of the more glaring issues is the **RESOLVED** PURF block for sent Pre-Overdue notices that is showing up and confusing some staff members.  This PURF block will automatically be moved into the PURF history so it won't be displayed.  Another is the functionality of the dot commands that was introduced with release 190 that don't work if you .C from CKO to CKI.  These dot commands will start working properly.  If anyone would like an electronic copy (pdf format) of the release notes let me know by email and I will send you a copy.

If you are thinking about printing your own spine labels but don't want to spend the money for a special printer that will hook up to your Dynix workstation, then I may have a solution for you.  On our department Web page (http://www.flls.org/cns/forms/cnsforms.htm) there is a link for Forms which will lead you to the Spine Label Template with directions.  The labels are unique and are available from Highsmith School and Library Products at a cost of $8.75 for 1225 labels.

I have added a report to MISCR to help identify the sender of any bounced Dynix email notices. The report is called "Patron Email Search". If you run this, be sure to enter the email address in lowercase letters. To abort the search, type in Q and press enter.

Directors’ Advisory Council Information

The Finger Lakes Library System Directors’ Advisory Council (DAC) was re-convened in the summer of 2003 in order to provide member libraries with an opportunity to participate in the development of Finger Lakes Library System services and to address matters of concern raised by member libraries.  The ten current members of the Council are:

Judy Barkee, Ulysses Philomathic Library, Trumansburg
Beverly Dann, Waverly Free Library
Stephen Erskine, Seymour Library, Auburn
Mary Frank, Peck Memorial Library, Marathon
Lois Maki, Newfield Library
Sally Otis, Hazard Library
Gail Park, Southworth Library, Dryden
Susan Robey, Groton Library
Janet Steiner, Tompkins County Public Library
Kay Zaharis, Cortland Free Library

As your representatives, DAC members are available to answer questions, or to bring an issue before the council for discussion.   They may be contacted by phone, e-mail, fax or in person at regular System meetings.  From time-to-time, members of DAC may contact other library directors to gather information and opinions.  We hope that DAC will develop into an effective voice for all our Finger Lakes Library System member libraries.
