Pioneer's Outreach Department Publishes Library Guide

Pioneer Library System, in partnership with the BOCES Geneseo Migrant Center, is entering the fourth year of a grant entitled Mobile Migrant Even Start. One of the goals during year three was to develop a bilingual "Library Guide for Families Participating in the Mobile Migrant Even Start Program." Special Projects Librarian, Maria Rocio Martinez, is the author of the "Guide" that is written in simple English/ Spanish and contains nine lessons with activity sheets covering basic information about libraries such as:

· Locating the Library
· Visiting the Library
· Library Rules
· Getting a Library Card
· Library Resources
· How a Library is Organized
· Parts of a Book
· Catalogs and
· Library Benefits

The "Guide" was developed because a search for low literacy information about using a public library proved difficult to find. Although the resource was designed for migrant families, it would be useful for libraries serving people that are educationally disadvantaged, members of ethnic or minority groups in need of special library services and/or literacy organizations such as Literacy Volunteers.

For additional information about the Mobile Migrant Even Start project please contact Patricia Stocker at 585-394-8260 or pstocker@pls-net.org. To order a copy of the 60+ page, spiral bound "Guide" contact the Outreach Services Department, Pioneer Library System, 2557 State Rt 21, Canandaigua, NY 14424. Cost is $9.00 including postage.
