Annual Meeting
As many of you, hopefully, are aware, Miriam Grace Monfredo, author, will be speaking at the upcoming Finger Lakes Library System Annual Meeting. For those of you who are not familiar with her work, I thought I would include a bibliography of her work here. Most library directors in the System are probably familiar with her work, but trustees may not be. Directors, please pass this information on to your boards in case they want to read some of her work before the meeting. Thanks!

Here are some examples of books that were challenged, restricted, removed or banned in 2002 - 2003 as reported in the Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom from May 2002 through May 2003:
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou; Bantam
Challenged as required reading for Hamilton, Mont. freshman English classes (2002). At issue are scenes in which the author explores her sexuality through intercourse as a teenager and the depiction of a rape and molestation of an 8-year-old girl; homosexuality is another theme explored in the book that has drawn criticism. Challenged, along with seventeen other titles in the Fairfax County, VA. elementary and secondary libraries (2002), by a group called Parents Against Bad Books in Schools. The group contends the books "contain profanity and descriptions of drug abuse, sexually explicit conduct, and torture." FLLS – Y Listserv
Thank you to those who have responded to the call for sign-ups to the new Finger Lakes youth services listserv. This is a reminder for those who haven’t yet! This listserv is different from FLLS-L because its purpose is to provide a means of communicating about youth services in member libraries. The messages will pertain primarily to youth. Please, if you haven’t already, send me the name and e-mail address of the appropriate person or people in your libraries (i.e. Children's librarians) for this list by Tuesday, September 30, 2003.
