REMINDER: Please register for the Trustee Workshop: “New Planning for Results,” on September 20, which Finger Lakes is hosting.
This is a wonderful opportunity for trustees to get an overview of the essential steps necessary to draft a forward-looking plan for their public libraries. I strongly encourage at least one trustee from each library to attend!
Trustee Workshop registrations are due at the FLLS by September 1st, just a little more than one week from now. If you have any questions please call me at 273-4074 x 26 or email marisa@flls.org.
Thank you.
ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Cataloging Services
It has come to my attention that there are a number of titles in the “Murder she wrote” series by Donald Bain that have main entries and added entries under the name of Jessica Fletcher. Despite Jessica Fletcher’s name being on the title page along with Donald Bain’s, cataloging rules do not allow her name to be used as either a main entry or an added entry. Furthermore, the rules only allow Jessica Fletcher’s name to be used as a subject heading (Fletcher, Jessica (Fictitious character). However, cataloging rules, like pie crusts, are meant to be broken. As a result, I believe it’s permissible to have Jessica Fletcher’s name used as either an added entry since most of your patrons are not aware of this particularly geeky situation – nor do they probably care. But the problem I find troublesome is that some of the member libraries’ holdings for Mr. Bain’s books have Bain and some have Fletcher for call numbers. As a result, a library may have the series shelved in different places. If you wish, you can search Dynix to see how your copies of the series are handled, and change any of the holdings to either Bain or Fletcher so they will be shelved in only one place. Please note that FLLS can not provide new spine labels for you. As far as the bib record goes, the main entry will always be Bain, Donald, and the added entry will be Fletcher, Jessica. And if you send in any new titles for cataloging, be sure to let us know if you want the holding to be Fletcher or Bain – if you don’t let us know on the process slip, vendor card or Dynix form, we will use Bain for the holding.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
