MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN
No. 03-32 August 8, 2003
ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Cataloging Services
The updated 22nd edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification schedule has recently been released for use by the library community. The new schedule is now being used by our major source of bibliographic records on Dynix, the Library of Congress. Many new numbers and topics have been assigned as well as significant updates to several schedules including 004-006 Computer science, 200 Religion, 305-306 Social groups and institutions, 340 Law, 510 Mathematics, and 610 Medicine and health.
Please be aware that materials you receive from your vendor of choice or FLLS will be using the new schedule. For the most part, most member libraries have relatively small collections, and I don’t suspect that the new schedule will radically affect the way your materials are shelved. However, I would suggest that if you notice any substantial differences between certain call numbers on materials in your current collection and a similar item just received, think about changing the numbers on the older materials – as well as the corresponding holdings on Dynix. But please don’t change the call number on a new item to an outdated number since this process locks you into having to always make changes when you receive similar materials in the future.
One note: Before you make any changes to call numbers on older materials, first look at the items carefully, and decided if they should be weeded from your collection instead of reclassified. Do you really need to change the call number on a ten year old medical guide or computer book?
If you have any questions, please contact me.
I have come across several instances where a member library has added a holding to a Dynix fast add created by another library. This should NEVER be done. If you can not find a complete (i.e. there is a title, author, publisher, publishing date, ISBN, etc.) bib record available in Dynix that matches the item in hand, you should create your own unique fast add and send the information to us via the vendor card or Dynix form. If you have any questions, please contact me.
