FLLS Delivery News – Fourth of July “special delivery” on Thursday, July 3.
Due to the holiday on the Fourth of July, FLLS will be closed. However, we will be providing deliveries to the Friday libraries (at the regular times) on Thursday, July 3rd. These are in addition to the regularly scheduled Thursday deliveries.
Featured web-site for the month: Library of Congress: Today in History
Have you taken a look recently at the Library of Congress website to explore the newest resources they have available?http://www.loc.gov/ “Today in History” is just one of many useful sections. It is part of the “American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library” and it features an important historical event in American history for each day of the year. http://memory.loc.gov/ It includes historical photos, sound and even short video clips depicting the event. Once you are in “Today in History” you can search their Archives three different ways:
1) Search the full-text of the archives,
2) Jump to a specific day, or
3) Browse the archive by month.
While you are there, browse some other areas – there are 100 different historical collections. I found myself browsing through collections of sheet music, such as Stephen Foster’s “Old Folks at Home Ethiopian melody” (also know as “Swanee River”).

CIPA UPHELD BY SUPREME COURT
On June 23, the Supreme Court upheld the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), overturning a lower court ruling that the law is unconstitutional. CIPA requires libraries receiving Federal funds under the Universal Service E-rate program, the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), and Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act E-Rate program or LSTA grants to have Internet safety policies in place and to install content filters on all computers, staff and public, connected to the Internet. With regard to E-Rate, CIPA applies only to reimbursements and discounts for Internet access and internal connections, not to basic telephone service. FLLS will share details about compliance with CIPA as we hear more. Although FLLS is opposed to Internet filters we will respect decisions made by member library trustees, and will assist any library that so chooses, to select the best product available for their needs.
