MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN

No. 03-17                                                                                                                                                   April 25, 2003

The libraries of New York State still need your help.

The New York State budget is still in limbo.  The Legislature is currently working to reach agreement on how to raise the money needed to spend what they want on education, higher education, and health related programs, and how to allocate the money among these programs.  We do not know whether state aid restoration for libraries, in whole or in part, will be included in any spending plan the Legislature considers.  Please continue to write and contact your state representatives about funding for libraries, and urge your users to do the same.

Our message is that libraries need the $13.3 million restored to the State budget.  Remind them that the $13.3 million benefits every library in the state and the people who use them.

Also, request that legislators contact you as soon as they know what the final budget will contain in terms of library aid.

Time Management Workshop

The South Central Regional Library Council offers a workshop entitled “Time Management, Planning and Prioritization for Small Libraries” on May 9, 2003 at the Holiday Inn, Ithaca New York.  A flyer and registration form will come in your next delivery.  Finger Lakes Library System member library staff are eligible to attend at the $20.00 member price.

Unique Management Services

The 5 Tompkins County Libraries will hear about the Unique Management Services, a delinquent account collection agency on May 12 at the Tompkins County Public Library.  This company’s product can link with the Dynix system.  Janet Steiner, Library Director invites representatives of other FLLS libraries to join them.  Please contact Janet directly if you are interested.

Teen Reads

Here is a list of favorite books from the Teen Advisory Board of the Haverill Public Library, in Haverill, MA.

Holes the Movie

Holes, the Newbery Award Winner by Louis Sachar, is out as a movie, and to rave reviews! If you’re looking for a way to tie programming into it, why not try a little reader’s theater? Aaron Shepard has adapted 3 stories from Sachar’s Sideways Stories from Wayside School into reader’s theater scripts. They are available on his website at: http://www.aaronshep.com/rt/RTE32.html.

When adding holdings to Dynix for new editions of materials that are published on a regular basis (i.e. once every one or two years), it is very useful for you to include the publishing year of the new item in the holding. Unfortunately, vendors usually do not indicate the date on spine label, but if you can add it to the spine label after you receive the item, this allows potential users to readily identify the most current editions when browsing the shelves. Here are some examples of materials that should have a date included on the Dynix holding and on the book spine:

To determine what year to put in the holding and on the spine label, choose the date in the following manner:

Reminder

I wanted to remind you to give us a call if your library is having Dynix or Internet connection problems.  When there are outages on our end due to server problems or problems with Clarity Connect we usually know about it.  But drops on your end, especially if you are on cable or another type of service, we usually don’t know about it until we hear from you.

Thanks.

"Debt Collect", a Dynix module which automates the recovery of lost items and fines has been purchased by TCPL.  TCPL will be holding a meeting on 12 May 2003 at 9:00AM at the library and invites any of the FLLS member libraries to attend.  Come and see if this cost recovery system will work for you.  Debt Collect works in conjunction with the company, Unique Management Services.  If you have an interest in material-recovery, you should consider attending this meeting.

Join the fun for a night of Trivia, on Sunday, April 27th, 6:30 – 9 PM, at the Spencer Municipal Building. Get together your team of 4 players (maximum) and compete for prizes. $5 per person donation to play will benefit Spencer Library. Evening will include a Chinese Auction, snacks and refreshments. Sign up your team in advance (limit 20 teams) at the library in person, by e-mail splibrary@htva.net, or by telephone 589-4496.  Call Grace Miller for information: 589-6541. Come early and enjoy a spaghetti supper 4-6 pm to support the Emergency Squad. Dinner is $5 and takeouts will be available.

Call or e-mail Susan Robey at the library if you are interested in tan Princeton files! She has lots and lots of them to give away.  They are metal and have some scratches on them, but otherwise they are in good shape.
