MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN

No. 03-13                                                                                                                                                   March 28, 2003

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS IS YOUR LAST PAPER COPY OF THE BULLETIN.  PLEASE CHECK YOUR E-MAIL OR OUR WEB PAGE, BEGINNING APRIL 4TH, FOR THE BULLETIN.

Reminder …the new delivery schedule goes into effect, starting Monday, March 31st.  Copies of the new schedule were sent out two weeks ago. If you have any questions, please call me

To all member libraries that have started using the newly revised Dynix add form – thank you for your cooperation! I realize that the new form is a little more complicated than the previous one, but the new form already has made it a lot easier to process Dynix add requests for you as well as provide libraries with the means of identifying situations where staff may need some extra Dynix holding maintenance training. I am still receiving some requests from member libraries submitted on the old form, but I am hopeful that you will soon start using the revised form.

SECOND NOTICE: We received a couple of weeks ago a paperback “Peanuts” book to catalog without a library key on the process slip, and there is no indication in the book of ownership. The title is “It’s great to be a super star” by Charles Schultz. Please let me know if you recognize the title. This is a good example of why it is important that a property stamp or label be added to a book before it is sent in for processing.

THIRD NOTICE: At the end of last month I enquired in the Weekly Bulletin for the second time about a request I received for vendor reimbursement that was sent to Headquarters without a library key to let me know which library sent it in. The vendor listed on the request is Brodart and the total amount requested was for $171.00. PLEASE contact me if you recognize this item – your reimbursement will not be processed unless I hear from you.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Gates Foundation Computer Upgrade: Episode II Attack of the Children’s Games

Last week in the bulletin I talked about the upgrade options for the Gates Foundation computers and that we had yet to see the documentation.  Well, we’ve seen it.  And, there is good news, you will be able to upgrade the Gates computers and keep the children’s games.

The printed manual that is included with the software kit has instructions for upgrading your computers and even includes a section on how to move Norton AntiVirus*.  The Gates Foundation also has posted on their web site a supplemental that includes the instructions to move the games.  If you go to the Computer Network Services section of the flls.org web page we have provided a link directly to the supplemental.  Please read this before you begin your upgrades.

Gail in Dryden has already upgraded one of her computers, minus the children’s games, and it took her approximately five hours.  Gates says that it can take from five to eight hours total, and probably will be closer to eight if you choose to reinstall the games.

Gates Foundation will provide unlimited technical support for this upgrade until May 17th.  Please plan your upgrades before this date and make use of their support.  Because of the time that it takes to upgrade each computer, Computer Network Services will not be able to do this upgrade for you.  We can provide help where needed but please, use the toll free support.

Content Server upgrades; we have not yet seen the install manual for this upgrade.  Based on the information on the Gates Foundation web site, and the knowledge that Gates didn’t intend the servers to be used as office and circulation computers, we assume that the instructions do not include information on migrating documents, mail and some personal settings.  Because of that we will be providing our own basic guide to migrate those types of files.  If you are not using the Content Server as an office computer (or circulation computer) then you should be able to proceed with the upgrade according to the documents in your upgrade kit.  We’ll try to have our guide finished by April 1st.  Please check the Computer Network Services section of the flls.org web site.

* Note – If you have purchased a newer version of Norton AntiVirus for your library and have installed it on your Gates Foundation computers you will want to re-install that software after the upgrade, not the Norton that originally came with the Gates computer.  Offhand I believe this would apply to Candor, Dryden, Port Byron and Interlaken.  If you have a question about that please give Computer Network Services a call.
