MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN

No. 03-11                                                                                                                                                   March 14, 2003

Some member libraries have reported receiving books processed by FLLS having TCPL barcodes on them. It appears that a sheet of TCPL barcodes somehow were accidentally used instead of the FLLS barcodes. If you happen to run into this situation on materials recently sent to you, you can simply attach a new FLLS barcode to the items and replace the barcode number on the Dynix holding using the replace barcode (RB) function in cataloging that is available from the same screen that you use to enter new Dynix holdings. If you need instructions on using this function, please call me or Jan Aguirre for help.

We have received a paperback “Peanuts” book to catalog without a library key on the process slip, and there is no indication in the book of ownership. The title is “It’s great to be a super star” by Charles Schultz. Please let me know if you recognize the title. This is a good example of why it is important that a property stamp or label be added to a book before it is sent in for processing.

2003 Book Replacement Grant: You have been previously notified that the total amount of money earmarked for the 2003 Book Replacement Grant has been reduced by one-half from $20,000 to $10,000. Although the amount to be paid out to participating libraries will be less than in previous years, it is still worthwhile to take advantage of the opportunity to weed your collection. However, if you decide not to take advantage of the grant opportunity, I would appreciate it if you would let me know so I can keep track of the participating libraries.

Please note that the date for the return of the printout to FLLS is May 15, 2003. If you have any questions, please contact me.

ANNUAL REPORT UPDATE

So far, 24 libraries have submitted their Annual Reports (Yeah!); eight are finished completely (Good job!), and seven have not submitted (Keep plugging away!).  As I review submitted reports, I have been e-mailing any questions, comments or concerns I may have with them.  Please check your e-mail as often as possible, as you may have a message from me concerning your report. And if you do hear from me, I ask that you respond as soon as possible.

For those of you who have not finished, I will be contacting you once I have finished with those reports that are complete.  If you have any questions concerning your reports, please don’t hesitate to contact me preferably by e-mail.

Signs of Spring

It’s cold, but SPRING IS ON THE WAY! The cardinals are singing their spring songs; the ducks are back on the creak; it’s still light outside when I get home from work! If you need to chase the winter blues away, why not try spotting signs of spring with your patrons and storytime groups. You could keep track on a bulletin board, or a display table, or just in conversation.
