MARISA IACOBUCCI, Adult Services Coordinator

Just a reminder: next Thursday, June 27th is the last System Meeting until September. Beverly Choltco-Devlin from the Mid York Library System will be here to discuss the wonders and uses of Dialog @ CARL. A flyer will be arriving at your library soon, if not already. I hope you all can come!

A Warning: Diana and I recently went to a workshop given by National Seminars Group which is also listed as a division of Rockhurst University Continuing Education Center, Inc. We found it disappointing and somewhat expense for what you receive. I would encourage you to carefully look into any workshop given by this group before deciding if you want to go. Feel free to contact Diana or me with any questions you may have about this organization.

DIANA McFARLAND, Youth Services Coordinator

FYI
I will be on vacation from July 1-12. Please contact me as soon as you can with questions, requests, etc. that need a response before the end of July. The Mr. Gumpy story time prop introduced at the Summer Reading System meeting has made the rounds to Aurora, Auburn, and Weedsport – to rave reviews, I’m told. If you’d like to borrow it, please contact me. (Marisa can be contacted about Mr. Gumpy while I’m on vacation.)

Happy Summer Reading Kick-Offs!

Summer Reading Suggestions from TCPL

Shelley Garvey, YA Librarian at TCPL has compiled a list of summer reading suggestions for teens. I’m sending a copy of this excellent resource to each library. If you’d like more copies, please let me know.

Road Trip USA

This is a message from the PUBYAC listserv. It sounds like a fun project, and a great way to help support another public library.

I'm writing to ask your help with a project I have planned at our library. Our summer reading program theme this year is "Reading Road Trip U.S.A.". The project would involve primary-grade children who would send one picture postcard to you, and in return, you would send a picture postcard of the area or state in which your library is located. After the children have shared their postcards from around the U.S.A., we will make a display of them. I would appreciate your help with this project very much. Please send a message to elizabethrobinson352@hotmail.com to let me know if you can help us out and include your library's address. Thank you in advance.

Happy Reading,
Liz Robinson

Summer Reading Update:

Thanks to all who have sent their library schedules for the summer! (I'm still accepting submissions...). I have received one Summer Program schedule with no library name on it ~ it sounds like a fun summer there, with Tales from Around the World, Alice in Wonderland, Doug Rougeaux, Tedd Arnold, and an Ice Cream Social planned. If this calendar of events looks familiar, please let me know who you are!

2001 World Book Encyclopedia

I just received this information from our World Book Rep:

I have great news for all those libraries with a tiny budget: The 2001 World Book price has just been lowered to $349! Also, the 2000 Student Discovery Encyclopedia is now $129!

This sounds like a great opportunity to update aging encyclopedias affordably. The World Book website is advertising the 2002 World Book for $949. The CREW guidelines for keeping encyclopedias current are to purchase "one new encyclopedia set every five years." I know budgets are short, but please consider this purchase seriously if you need to update. Please contact me if you have questions! (X27, dianam@flls.org)
