Consumer Health Information

The following message, copied from NYLINE, may be of interest to libraries that provide health related information for their users. The State of New York Department of Health has issued a booklet titled “Break Loose”. Advertised on TV in public service announcements featuring Stephen M. Porter, this guide summarizes diseases caused by smoking, the chemicals in tobacco smoke, the body's reaction to quitting, and alternatives to lighting up. The guide and related facts sheets may be ordered online or by calling (888) 609-6292. The New York State Smokers Quitline is located at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and is supported by the New York State Department of Health. Additional tobacco-related information is available at . Additional health-related information is provided by the New York State Department of Health at .

Annual New York State Legislative Day Library Legislative Day 2002 is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19. Governor Pataki did not increase funding for libraries in his recently released budget. It is important to let our New York State Legislators know that libraries are “more important than ever,” and that more funding is needed. Watch your delivery for more details.

NYLA YSS Conference Continuing Education Grants:

If you are interested in attending the YSS Spring Conference in April, please consider applying for a Continuing Education Grant from Finger Lakes library System. You may apply for a grant to cover the registration fee. The conference looks like it will be a lot of fun, and includes a session on “Splish! Splash! Read!” crafts. (You should have received a brochure for the conference in the delivery this week. If you haven’t received one, please let me know and I’ll send another one out to you). Please contact Diana for an application for the grant (x27, dianam@flls.org)
