The conference will feature workshops on “Splish Splash Read” craft ideas, storytelling, and teen advisory councils, among others.

A scholarship (for conference fee, lodging and meal allowance) is available to anyone who is:

  1. an enrolled graduate library school student (full or part-time) OR
  2. a practicing librarian or paraprofessional employed in NYS OR
  3. involved in a related youth services field (i.e. storytelling, writing, illustrating).

The applicant must be directing his or her course of study toward youth services or working in youth services in a public or school library or related field AND be a regular or student member of the Youth Services Section (YSS) of NYLA.

I’ve gotten word of a few performers who are offering programs centered on the Summer Reading “Splish Splash Read” theme.

Sue Smith-Heavenright of Dos Madres Storytellers, based in Candor. Carol Visscher at Nichols,  Fran Howe at Candor, and Linda Williams at Owego are listed as references.

Tom Rasley: “’Water Water Everywhere’ is a [40 min.] program with songs, stories, skits, jokes, and the tale of how George went over Niagara Falls. Lots of participation!”  He performed in Waterloo last summer.

Tom Sieling: “Take a Tromp Through the Swamp…And a Break by the Lake!” Sally Sutcliffe at Trumansburg is listed as a reference.

“Onondaga County Public Library has an LSTA grant entitled "LYNX: Linking Youth to 'Net excellence."  The target audience of the grant is students in grades 3-6 and their parents.  As part of the grant, we will be offering some workshops presented by Gail Junion-Metz. We are inviting staff from libraries in neighboring systems to take advantage of this opportunity.”

’Net Basics for Children’s Librarians covers locating resources on the web and specific www resources for 3rd - 6th graders. (Offered twice: 2/27, 2/28)

Teaching Internet Use to Kids and Their Parents covers teaching kids and their parents how to search for and evaluate websites. (Offered 2/27)

The workshops are free, but advance registration is necessary in order to prepare enough handouts and set up the rooms properly.  Space is somewhat limited, so early registration is encouraged. The Wednesday [February 27] sessions are at the Northern Onondaga Public Library at North Syracuse.  The Thursday [February 28] session is at the Onondaga County Central Library in downtown Syracuse.
