No. 01-36                                                                                                                        October 5, 2001

FYI… There will be limited staff at System Headquarters on Wednesday,
October 10th  due to our 43rd Annual Meeting.

ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Cataloging Services

I will be out of the office from Monday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 19.
Please hold off sending any video recordings in for cataloging until I
return on Monday, Oct. 22. All other materials such as books, sound
recordings, vendor cards, and update forms can be sent in as usual. While I
am gone, any requests for supplies such as process forms or barcodes should
be forwarded to Susan Tompkins (ext. 31). If there are any other questions
or problems, please wait until I return.
REMINDER for Dynix users: If you send in ANY materials to FLLS for
processing and/or cataloging, DO NOT create fast adds. Fast adds are ONLY
created so you can immediately circulate materials (e.g. vendor processed
books or books you process yourself) without having to send them in for
processing. If you create fast adds for materials that are subsequently sent
in for processing, you are erroneously telling your patrons via Dynix that
they are available for checkout. If there are any questions, please contact
me.

MELANIE HEMINGWAY, Outreach Services

I have two new paperback copies of Sun Tzu's THE ART OF WAR (Oxford
University Press, 1971). Auburn Correctional Facility cannot use these; cost
is $9.95 for each. Only TCPL has a copy in Dynix. Any takers? Call me if
interested, extension 28, or email me: melanieh@flls.org

DIANA McFARLAND, Youth Services

Excluded from the Preview Books catalog for new titles in the FLLS youth
collection was the popular "Give a Dog a Bone" by Steven Kellogg. ISBN:
1587170019. $15.95.

MARISA IACOBUCCI, Adult Services

I am back and very glad to be here! During my “vacation” (this term is used
in the broadest terms here...) the sadness in New York City and Washington,
and for that matter the whole country, occurred; my father-in-law was
suddenly taken ill and then passed away and the funeral, etc. followed. It
was quite a challenging three weeks. I am very grateful to have such a
wonderfully supportive group of co-workers, and was glad to come back to
work to relax! J

If you have any questions or concerns that you were reserving for my
return…please do not hesitate to call or e-mail. I always look forward to
hearing from you.
Maria Hazapis e-mailed with some new federal data elements that will need to
be answered on the 2001 annual report. I know…who wants to think about that
now, but the sooner you prepare that the smoother things will ultimately go.
The text of the e-mail is below. Please read this! Give me a call if you
have any questions.
PART 1 - General Information
The director/manager's e-mail address and fax number are new FSCS
(Federal-State Cooperative System) data elements. The rationale was that
the nature of communication has made this information a common standard for
contacting individuals and would serve a role in a quick response to issues
requiring a rapid turnaround. This information must be entered even if it
is the same as the library's e-mail address and fax number.
PART 9 - Outlet Information
Square Footage of Public Library Outlets (Main and Branches) is a new
federal question.
The rationale is that this information is a basic characteristic of
libraries that should be available (on a deed or lease agreement); estimates
or N/A are not acceptable. If this number is updated annually, it will be
possible to answer questions regarding library
construction and expansion.
As it turns out, this ties in with Senator Schumer's $5 billion proposal for
library construction! Please alert your members to get out the rulers,
yardsticks and tape measures - this would make a great activity for a youth
program on measuring!!! :-)
Here's the federal definition. "Provide the area, in square feet, of the
public library outlet (main library or branch). Report the total area in
square feet for each library outlet (main library or branch) separately.
This is the area on all floors enclosed by the outer walls of the library
outlet. Include any areas shared with another agency or agencies if the
outlet has use of that area." (Yes, the total square footage of each
outlet includes non-public space.)
