MEMBER LIBRARY WEEKLY BULLETIN

No. 00-37 September 15, 2000

And the list goes on… Congratulations to Groton Public Library for winning their appeal to the Gates Grant Foundation!!

* KAREN CREENAN: Executive Director

We are delighted to announce that Marisa Iacobucci has accepted the position of Adult Services Coordinator. Her first day will be October 23rd. Marisa has been the Director of the Hamilton Public Library in the Mid York Library System since 1992. She understands the special challenges faced by those who work in small libraries. We think she will be a wonderful addition to the Finger Lakes Library System staff, and a great resource for member libraries.

The Fall FLLS Newsletter is in the mail and your invitation to our 42nd Annual Meeting is enclosed. If you don’t receive your newsletter soon, please give us a call. You won’t want to miss hearing Chancellor Hayden speak.

* ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Bibliographic Database Services

November 10 has been designated as the last day that FLLS will be open in our current location. However, department activities for that day will be limited to preparing for the move to the new location. One major consideration with regard to the move is deciding what to do about materials you send in for cataloging and processing. At any one time we may have approximately 25 book trucks loaded with materials waiting to be cataloged and processed, and this usually amounts to about one month’s department activity. To avoid having to unload book carts and box up unprocessed materials, I have determined that it is necessary to request that you suspend sending in materials for cataloging and processing after Oct. 13.

Once the move is completed, we will accept materials from you once again, but I have yet to determine an appropriate date. In addition, since we do not have extra space in the new location to store more than the usual amount of materials, I will be requesting that you send in the most important items first and the remainder at a later time.

The suspension of accepting materials for cataloging and processing does not include vendor cards or Le Pac/Dynix update forms. You may continue to submit requests for adds, deletes and changes in the usual manner. Finally, if there is a locally obtained item that you believe can not wait until after the move to be cataloged and processed, please let me know personally and I will work out arrangements to have it expedited – I believe such an item would be handled under the established procedure we have for materials submitted with a green "EXPEDITED PROCESS" form.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

A meeting of minds…(bring yours to the Pow-Wow full of Questions and Good Ideas!)

Our September meeting will offer an opportunity to participate in small group discussions on three

different topics in a table talks format. The topics will be:

E-BOOKS, E-GAD!  Kathy Parkhurst will share information about the LSTA funded Rochester Public Library e-book project.

CDs & DVDs: FAMILIAR FRIENDS IN NEW FORMATS

Do we buy now or do we wait? Robert McLaughlin will lead a discussion about the pros and cons of offering these new formats.

EXTRA "HANDS ON HAND" & HOW TO "SHAKE" THEM

Melanie Hemmingway and Gay Huddle from the Tompkins County Public

Library will field questions about the care and feeding of volunteers.

Each topic will be repeated, and everyone will have an opportunity to participate in all three discussion groups. We will round out the morning with "POTPOURRI OF PROGRAMS". Anyone who is willing, is invited to share a successful program in your library with your fellow library directors.

So come prepared with your questions and your experiences!
