JUDY SWANN, Information Services Coordinator and Trainer
- According to ZD journals, there are an estimated 1 billion
web pages "out there" and none of the top 13 search engines
catalog more than 300 million of them. About half of all Web pages are
indexed by only one search engine, and not all the elided pages are purely
personal. To tune up your web searching skills, visit Search Engine Showdown
(http://searchengineshowdown.com). It will teach you searching
strategies and provide you with search news, reviews, feature comparisons,
and mountains of search data and statistics.
- The upgraded version of Java WebPac has been loaded. For
those libraries that already had working profiles, all is well. But for
those libraries still need profiles (Dryden, Weedsport, etc.), the server is
not connecting. I have a call into Dynix about this. For the working
profiles, the biggest plus is that you can click on the printer icon that
appears on pages where you have results displayed to print a text-formatted
list of the titles in your results, rather than printing the picture of the
screen, which uses up tons of ink.
GAIL MORRISON, Apalachin Reading Center, Director
- Apalachin has The Merck Manual of Medical Information, Home
Edition, c1997, and the 1999 Complete Guide to Prescription and
Nonprescription Drugs available if any library would like them. They
were donated to us in excellent condition, and we already have copies on our
shelves. Call or fax, Gail or Becky, 607-625-3333.
