ROBERT McLAUGHLIN, Bibliographic Database Services

Once again, this time of year beckons me to convey to you a most sincere wish.  However, it is not for a happy holiday (this will come later in the month). Instead, I would wish that you PLEASE adhere to the FLLS policy with regard to the use of the green Expedited Process slip. According to the Finger Lakes Library System Services, Policies and Procedures manual, the correct use of the Expedited Process slip is as follows:

A. Expedited process

The green form is only used to expedite a narrow range of materials (this includes non-book materials). When   materials are expedited, they are merely put at the beginning of the processing line. It does not mean that FLLS will stop all other processing activities in the department in order to return expedited materials to a member library (see note below). The type of materials eligible for expedited processing are as follows:

Titles that appear on the current consolidated book review, TIPS, but are acquired from another source other than a vendor (e.g. gifts, or titles not available from a vendor) Titles from one of the bestseller lists that are purchased locally to satisfy patron demand for titles normally ordered from a vendor.

Titles from reading programs for special displays.

Titles that are acquired as memorials.

It is necessary that the above-mentioned categories be clearly indicated at the top of the green form. If materials with a green forms arrive at FLLS without some indication of their categories, they will be processed in the regular manner described below.

Note: Although FLLS will expedite materials for any specific request outside of the categories listed above, a specific request is defined as one that is extraordinary in nature (e.g. a title that is needed for a special event), and not just a member library’s desire to have newly acquired materials processed ahead of other materials. In the case of a specific request, FLLS will make every effort to return the material back to the member library as soon as possible). Specific requests should use the green Expedited Process form and be routed directly to the Head of Bibliographic Database Maintenance at FLLS.  We have been receiving large numbers of materials that do not meet the above criteria (e.g., large type books, replacement copies of older materials, etc.). One consequence of the misuse of the Expedited Process form is that we will simply ignore them.

Thank you,

The Grinch
